As one who knew enough about hell could imagine, the water did little to ward off the skeletal hand made of hellfire and the heat in the area evaporated the water as it barely had a chance to make contact. The jet of light on the other hand it did feel, and it was enough to turn the hand's attention to the witch who cast the spell in the first place. Moving upward and then closing into a fist before it came crashing down above the heads of the witch and the Traveling Bard.

The skeletal hand of living darkness would not meet its mark. In a flash of azure movement, Demetrios placed himself in its path, raising his off hand to block it. Barely bending his knees beneath the force of the blow, he closed his fingers around the spindly hand, holding fast as he wrenched it to the side and swung his blazing sword in a wide upward arc to sever it.
"Someone get her up and see to her!" he called to his companions - of course referring to Sincara. They needed to suppress this resistance quickly so they could heal her in peace before they moved on. To that end, the Shadow of Darkbroode raised his mighty sword, the blade wreathing itself in a searing plume of cerulean hellfire and magical energy. The Ajerian's eyes narrowed, fixed upon the gouts of flame where the skull had just been, before he gave a forward swing and unleashed that gathered energy in a massive, seething bolt of magical power seeking to crash down against that leyline of the Netherrealm's energy and tear a great hole in its flow.

Gabrielle wasn't sure how to answer the child's question. She knew Xena was able to deflect a fireball hurled by Hades himself, but this was more than just a fireball and it was a new world. That wouldn't stop the Traveling Bard from trying though. But as she was about to throw her chakram a second time, the hand was warded off by the Ajerian who pulled their attention back towards Sincara. Getting a running start, the Traveling Bard leaped across platforms and landed next to Sincara, picking her up off the ground and carrying her over her shoulder. "I got her!"

“Never mind.”
"Someone get her up and see to her!"
Zora's attention returned to Sincara, watching Gabrielle jump platforms to get to her and following suit. Keeping her wand held out and tight in her grip just in case this realm had any more surprises in stored for them while she stayed at Gabrielle's side.
"I got her!"
“That's great. You got her. Now what?”

The attack hit and a great wound was inflicted upon the heart of the Netherrealm as it shook violently from the devastating destructive power of the Ajerian's might. It seems his plan has worked more than he could have ever hoped for. The Netherrealm was beginning to be destroyed by its own power and it hold on the land of Genesis ever fleeting.
Then there was laughter.
The sorcerer Quan Chi appeared before the group as behind him over head they could see a twister of souls exiting through the wound created as the realm's power continued to fall and collapse in on itself. But Quan Chi looked pleased about this development.
"You have done well, Ajerian. Now that the Nethereralm is on the verge of collapse our souls are no longer bound to it. We are no longer bound to Ranko. We can now take back the world that was denied to us by the Creator ever since the beginning of time!"

His attack struck true. The ground around them ruptured and exploded, and from the breach poured forth a vortex of freed souls, the Netherrealm's grip upon them wrested away by the disruption of this flow of power. All around them, the destruction wrought itself further and further, the land buckling and blasting apart in all directions...
Then came the laughter. The Ajerian turned his head and was met by the sight of the chuckling Quan Chi, showing his face to tell of some ulterior scheme of his. Clearly, he had been waiting for an opportunity to usurp his master; after all, he had once ruled this place. Demetrios wasn't impressed.
With the world crumbling around them, he didn't have time to be.
"All of you," his voice thundered forth with a new depth, power and authority. He was expecting to be heeded to the letter, with this mission in his hands. "Back to the surface. If another wave of attack is coming to Kari, you need to warn them and muster the defence."
The eye sockets of the many skulls that adorned his armour and the flat of his blade suddenly roared to life with azure flames, heraldic displays of the immense power he was calling forth. The ground beneath his feet cracked and buckled as his aura grew countless times denser and stronger. There was no way he was letting Quan Chi get away this time.
"I'll handle this."

Gabrielle didn't have the chance to respond to Zora's question as Quan Chi appeared and then Demetrios told them to leave. Their plan had succeeded and as a result this place was only seconds away from collapsing as the souls that once dwell here was set free. The Traveling Bard nodded to acknowledge Demetrios' command and then motioned for the others to follow her back to the nexus while she carried Sincara in her arms. "Come on. This place is going to blow."

“What!?”
Collar Zora confused. She had no idea what that strange grayish white bald-headed man was saying. But he was actually happy that they were successful. Was that why they met no opposition? The souls of the Netherrealm wanted freedom?
"All of you. Back to the surface. If another wave of attack is coming to Kari, you need to warn them and muster the defence. I'll handle this."
“Y-yeah. You handle it. That sounds like a good plan.”
Zora wasn't about to contest it. She didn't want to stay in this place another second. She already felt like she was going to pass and since Gabrielle only had two arms that meant the other guy would have to carry her. No thanks, she thought.
"Come on. This place is going to blow."
“What was your first clue?” asked Zora as she followed Gabrielle out of the Nexus with the others and returned to Moon Valley.

"Still holding on to a pointless vendetta, I see. Allow us to put you to rest."Quan Chi raised up his arms, rubble falling towards the ground by his feet as the lake of fire started to rise up. Taking the form of the Netherrealm god Shinnok. Shadowing over the place where Demetrios stood, raising up his hand and bringing it down to squash the Ajerian like a common insect.

The Dread Seraph turned around on feeling a presence behind him. What he saw was a hulking figure rising from the flames, taking the form of some ally of Quan Chi's. The Ajerian watched as it reared up, raising a balled fist as if about to squash an insect...
If Quan Chi had been able to see his opponent's face, he'd have seen boredom.
The instant before that fist would've come down upon him, the Ajerian disappeared. No hint of evasion, no visible sidestep - he merely vanished with impossible celerity. He reappeared right in front of Quan Chi, rushing at him with such celerity he seemed about to smash into him in the same moment in time he had taken to dodge the blazing fist behind him.
The Shadow of Darkbroode had his free left arm raised and bent, and plowed into the sorcerer with an elbow strike to his chest that would shatter a large portion of his ribcage. If he made contact, Demetrios was ready to follow up, stepping aside into an equally vicious backhand to Quan Chi's left temple and twisting into a lightning-fast diagonal swing of his blade to bisect the sorcerer before he had any chance to right himself or counter.

Quan Chi felt his ribcage shatter, his head turned from the smack to his temple and finally split open by the Ajerian's blade. Green mist coming out of the wound as the Sorcerer turned into a skeleton and fell against the ground before the real Quan Chi appeared behind the Dread Seraph.
"If you want my life, I haven't one to give. You have something that belongs to me."
The Sorcerer lifted up his hand and Demetrios would feel an invisible tug on the magic amulet around his neck as Quan Chi attempted to take it back into his own possession.
"Allow me to take it off your hands."

An illusion. He might've guessed. Demetrios' eyes narrowed at the sight of the next Quan Chi to step before him; this one's aura was denser and stronger, marking him as the real thing.
"We'll see about that," the Ajerian snarled in response, before he felt an invisible force tugging at his neck. The amulet pulled itself from within his armour and held almost horizontally, wavering slightly as if being pulled by an unnatural gravity towards Quan Chi. The armoured warrior held fast for a few seconds, bending only very slightly at the waist under the pull, then reached up to the back of his neck with his free hand.
With a quick pinch, he severed the cord that held the amulet in place and it soared across the distance towards Quan Chi, front face first... Hidden on the underside was a folded-up magus seal. It glowed bright red for a split-second, unseen to the sorcerer, and when the amulet was mere feet from him it unleashed a violent explosion of energy. The blast was cone-shaped, directed straight at Quan Chi, and threatened to blow the amulet to pieces with its fierce power.
At the same time, Demetrios stomped his right foot sharply. The ground beneath his feet cratered, there came a brief and powerful tremor, and a moment after the explosion, three large slabs of rock shattered forth out of the ground around the sorcerer and swung upwards to entomb him within them. These too would explode just as suddenly to shred Quan Chi with a burst of stone shrapnel.

A crooked smile on his face, Quan Chi reached out for the approaching amulet. Only to watch in shock as the amulet exploded before his very eyes and a powerful blast of energy hit. Knocking him through the air from the impact. Rage consumed the sorcerer as his most beloved artifact he has ever come to known was gone. Lost forever all because of that damn Ajerian. He was going to make him pay one way or another. Quan Chi would not allow himself to be defeated!
But by the time he got up to his feet he found himself trapped. Entombed in rock. He tried to wiggle free only to fall short as he lacked the strength to escape. His weakness only growing as a result of his failure back on Aircano. Then the rock exploded and shrapnel ripped through his body. Blood gushed out and the sorcerer fell against the ground. Watching his home slowly tear apart all around him as he laid there bleeding out.

As the sorcerer fell, his body shredded and his amulet destroyed, Demetrios allowed himself a momentary smile of satisfaction. Very momentary. Mostly, this was because of the first thought to pass through his head at the sight.
Too easy. What's he planning?
Better to be sure. He'd normally stain his blade with the killing blow, but knowing this trickster, he was better off playing it safe. The Ajerian gave a turn of his wrist and drove Diabolus into the crumbling ground before him. The skulls that adorned the flat of the blade raged with plumes of azure flame from their eye sockets, a conflagration of energy gathering along the edge of the blade, before he swung it upwards in Quan Chi's direction.
There came a mighty, resonant boom as a crackling shockwave of energy ripped across the plateau towards Quan Chi, a criss-crossing web of blue sparks of light heralding its destructive advance. This assault would finish the job of rending Quan Chi to bloody pieces, as well as sink the entire outer portion of the plateau into the lava beneath, leaving Demetrios on solid ground - victorious.

Quan Chi's body was destroyed and all that remained of the sorcerer was a blood splatter on the ground. But as quickly as the body was vanquished a green blast of light shot up into the sky and the souls the sorcerer has claimed for the past 20,000 years came shooting out of the remains of Quan Chi. Powerful spirits that now had nowhere to go but the planet the Ajerian had sworn to protect. Though Quan Chi's death has left the Netherrealm without a leader, they were now three times the size they were previously. With no bodies or place to call their own they had only one place to go.
Genesis.
