Defeat. They had managed to take the Jherrazad camp only to fail in their ambush. The only good that could come from Isafaro's attack on the Empire is the chance that both nations would kill each other and save Kain the trouble of dealing with either side. The only survivors to return to Kari's refugee camp was Gabrielle, the child and Kain himself. A heavy heart beneath his chest though one would never be able to tell through his hardened face. That was what a leader needed to carry on. "May they never be forgotten."

Gabrielle has seen a lot of things in her lifetime but nothing exactly like those 'things' that attacked after they were being restrained by what she believed to be Jherrazad natives. Her mind could not comprehend what those things were. They couldn't be gods or demons. Some kind of new war device? Gabrielle would have to remind herself to ask Kain later but now definitely wasn't the time for such a thing. As they headed back to the refugee camp, the Battling Bard of Potidaea turned her head to Zora. "How are you holding up?"

"May they never be forgotten."
No promises, old man, thought Zora.
"How are you holding up?"
“As good as a person who were nearly killed can,” replied Zora quietly enough so only Gabrielle could hear. “I told you helping them was a bad idea.”

Kain turned to face Gabrielle and Zora and while he didn't catch their conversation his words would certainly seem like he did. "You both may leave anytime you wish. I will ask no more than either of you are willing to give." He then looked back to the horizon where the Crystal Expanse and the Downward Spiral could be found in the distance. "One camp and the only ones to survive with me are you two. It would seem Jherrazad has some new warriors on their side. Possible outsiders like the two of you." He turned back to them. "Some more scouting is required."

Good. At least she knew Zora was fine. "We're not going to quit just because we didn't get the result we wanted. We've made a promise to these people and we're going to stick by that." The Battling Bard waited for what would no doubt be another tantrum by the child before looking back to Kain as he spoke to them, an apologetic look on her face while replying. "I gave you my word, Kain. I'm not about to leave just because things are looking dim. I've been through much worse in my life, believe me." And that's the truth. "Do you have any idea what those 'things' that attacked us back there were? Some kind of new war device?"

"We're not going to quit just because we didn't get the result we wanted. We've made a promise to these people and we're going to stick by that."
“We?”
Zora stopped in her tracks altogether.
“We!?”
The rage built, her face beginning to change color as she walked up in front of Gabrielle and looked her in the eye.
“There is no we, only you! We're in the desert because of you! We're helping these people we have no business getting involved with because of you! There is no we! It's all just been you!”

"Armored vehicles used in long and short range combat. We call them tanks." Before Kain could say anything else Zora stepped up and began unloading upon the adult she has been accompanying since the two sides came together. Seeing this as a private matter Kain turned to give them their privacy. "I'll leave you two to settle this." And then returned to the people in the camp to tell them the bad news.

"Tanks?" That was new. Gabrielle wouldn't be able to ask anything else when Zora decided to snap and go off on her. Kain decided to leave the two to their conversation and the Battling Bard allowed Zora to get all of her anger and frustration out before she said anything in response. "You were free to leave at any time, Zora. You made the choice to stay."

"You were free to leave at any time, Zora. You made the choice to stay."
“Where the hell was I supposed to go!? Huh!? We were in the middle of a frozen wasteland, then we were in the middle of a desert wasteland and now we are in the middle of a war! Don't put this on me! I had nowhere else to possibly go and you knew it! This is on your head not mine!”

After the child's rant was over a frown appeared on the Battling Bard of Potidaea, disappointed at this development but honestly not surprised. "Perhaps I had you peg wrong. The way you went on I thought I was being accompanied by a talented young lady. I see now that you really are a child. You're not to leave the camp without an escort from now on. When I am done here I will take you to the Spiral and see if we can get you back to your own world. Now excuse me." Gabrielle headed off to find Kain but expected that any second now the child would speak up again in protest. Any second now...

I'm not done talking to you!"Zora pointed her finger at Gabrielle as she continued, "If it wasn't for me you'd be buried in the sand by one of those miserable muggle wands those soldiers carried so you show me some damn respect right now!"

Gabrielle smiled to herself when Zora interrupted her walk and then dropped it before turning around to face the child again. "That works both ways, Zora." Gabrielle took a couple of more steps closer and stood just a few feet from the child now. "You can't expect to just be given respect, or expect it when you lack it for everyone you meet. If this is going to work you're going to lose the attitude. Am I understood?"

"That works both ways, Zora."
“What?”
"You can't expect to just be given respect, or expect it when you lack it for everyone you meet. If this is going to work you're going to lose the attitude. Am I understood?"
“The hell I–!”
Zora was interrupted when suddenly a large energy beam shot out from the roof of the tower back in the Crystal Expanse and it reached out to the heavens earning the attention of the Kari's refugees at the camp and all of Jherra and Genesis in the process.
“Can't...”

Kain's eyes caught notice of the tower's sudden burst of activity and immediately began shouting off orders, telling one half of a small group of soldiers to stay at the camp and the other half to gear up and prepare for battle as Kain planned to head for the tower and investigate what was going on. Before doing so he ran up to Gabrielle and Zora. "I trust your affairs are in order." If only he knew. "I'm leading a team to investigate the tower's current activity. The two of you coming?"

Their argument was stopped dead in its track by the sudden wave of energy that shot out from the top of the tower stretching out so far up into the sky it caused even the Battling Bard to stare in awe at the wonder. But what could have caused it to perform such an action? Already Kain was preparing more troops and approached the two of them hoping that their issues were resolved. To his question Gabrielle turned back to Zora and looked at her. "Are we?"
