"Zora, shut up!" So far Gabrielle has done a good job of putting up with Zora's rude behavior but the time to draw the line in the sand was now. It was obvious that Zora was spoiled and rotten as an egg and that would have to change if she were going to be traveling with Gabrielle. "I don't want anything from you," Gabrielle replied to Kain. "I want to help you and these people because I believe it's the right thing to do. But in order to do that I need to have some understanding of what's going on. Is there nothing I can do to get you to trust me?"

Kain looked over to where the Crystal Expanse and the Downward Spiral could be seen just over the horizon, thinking long and hard about what he would do next. Without even turning back to look at the other two he spoke, "Many years ago the land of frozen crystal ice you see before you used to be a beautiful metropolis in its own right. There was only one sun then and it shined brightly over us as we fought against the tyranny of Isafaro and shared our technology with the rest of the world. But one day we would be the victims of an event which would be known throughout history as the "Great Freeze" and it would create the expanse you see today."Kain shook his head. Ashamed that it was through their own incompetence that their nation was frozen in time for years only recently being released back into the couscous world. "By a miracle half of the Crystal Expanse was melted away and the left over water created more desert that Jherrazad was quick to declare their own even though the land here rightfully belongs to us. We are but a shadow of what we once were and now Jherrazad threatens to take away what little sanctuary we have left."

At long last after several minutes of countless back and forth with this man she had managed to convince him to tell her more about this place. And what a story indeed. Gabrielle looked out to the crystal expanse and tried to imagine what it was like beforehand but the word 'metropolis' was unfamiliar to her. So was technology but tyranny? Tyranny she understood all too well. "Is there no way to speak with the Empress and try to convince her to let you and your people stay? Or is she as every bit a tyrant as the people who run Isafaro?"

Zora's eyes grew wide, the widest they've ever been upon being told, by a grown up of all things, to shut up.
“Shut up? SHUT UP?!”
The witch was furious and about to give Gabrielle a piece of her mind until Kain interrupted her before she could even get started.
"Many years ago the land of frozen crystal ice you see before you used to be a beautiful metropolis in its own right."
“Hey! I'm trying to talk over here.”
"There was only one sun then."
And just like that, Zora became quiet. She listened to the rest of Karin’s story with actual interest for once and waited for the right time in order to ask the question that was eating away at her. While Gabrielle question was fair Zora thought there was another one more worth noting.
“I'm sorry, did you say there were only one sun back then?”

"They'll never give up their claim on the desert. They won't stop until we're relocated or slaughtered." But Kain had no intention of being relocated or killed. Already he and his men were hatching a scheme to take back THEIR land. Perhaps this woman could be of some use after all. "There are several camps all around us under the banner of Jherrazad. The closest is just west of our position. Our intelligence have uncovered out that they're planning to force us out. But not unless we force them out first." Kain then looked down towards the child as she asked her question. "Yes. I do not know how the second one came about but back then there were only one sun burning in the sky."

"Are you sure about that? Have you even tried?" At the end this was indeed what it all came down to. Fighting over land. How many wars in the world have been started over that alone? She had a good feeling what his answer would be but felt the need to ask it anyway. Hopefully he would not become annoyed with her now that she had finally gotten somewhere in this conversation with him. "What did you have in mind for the camp?"

"Try? Try!?" Kain spun around in outrage at Gabrielle's question. "Have I tried to negotiate with devils and fiends, you mean? No. I haven't tried. I haven't tried because I already know what the end result will be. Jherrazad is no better than Isafaro when it comes to preserving their own nation and what they believe to be their birth right. I have not tried." Kain turned around a second time, back now facing the two as he continued on about the camps. "We'll attack the camp while they're sleeping and then drive them out. When they've failed to report back to the castle the Empress will send someone to investigate the area, more than likely the people at the nearest camp. We ambush them and thin out their numbers from there. The first person to cross our path of actual worth to the Empress we capture."

"Yes. I do not know how the second one came about but back then there were only one sun burning in the sky."
“That's... that's a major sufficient change in your landscape. One would have assumed you'd at least overheard something... but I guess you just had your head in the sand for too long.”
"Are you sure about that? Have you even tried?"
“You mean like we tried to see the Empress? Oh that's right, we didn't.”
"Try? Try!? Have I tried to negotiate with devils and fiends, you mean? No. I haven't tried. I haven't tried because I already know what the end result will be. Jherrazad is no better than Isafaro when it comes to preserving their own nation and what they believe to be their birth right. I have not tried."
“Ooh, you made him mad.”

Gabrielle gritted her teeth as she got the one reaction she didn't want to get out of Kain. Anger. Especially not now after coming this far. It would appear luck was on her side on this day as her recent question did not cause Kain to choose to end this conversation here and now but Zora's comments certainly wasn't going to win them any bonus points. "Zora, go wait by the camel."

Kain watched the back and forth of woman and child before turning his attention back on Gabrielle. "Well? What will you do?" He watched her, not expecting much at the end of the day. Whether she chose to help him or not was irrelevant. But what did concern him was the idea of him going to the Empress and possibly spilling his plans. That what concerned him.

"Zora, go wait by the camel."
Zora began to head for the camel but before she did she turned around to address Gabrielle one more time.
“Let's get one thing straight, I'm going to wait by the camel because I want to wait by the camel. Not because you want me to wait by the camel.”
The young witch nodded with a false sense of accomplishment as she walked over to the camel and stayed by it, keeping a few feet away because well... it was a camel, while waiting on Gabrielle.

"Yes, of course." Gabrielle nodded towards Zora all while suppressing a laugh as the child struggled to defy her word in any way she could. Then she thought of how Zora could qualify as her sidekick and how when it came to sidekicks Hercules and Xena got the better end of that deal. She smiled at the memories before it faded and she was one hundred percent back to business. "I'll help you take the camp. Zora may not look like much but she has some serious power on her side so I recommend taking her with us."

"She has a mouth on her too," said Kain, looking over to Zora by the camel before returning his sight to Gabrielle. "The child can come but she's your responsibility. Be prepared. We head for the camp at dusk."

Gabrielle let out a laugh and smiled at Kain's comment on the child. "You're right about that but she's young. She still has time to learn to be humbled." Gabrielle had a feeling that Zora came from a wealthy family. She had a sense of superiority about her and those weren't all uncommon from a spoiled rich upbringing. Not all rich children were like this, but some were. The Battling Bard of Potidaea nodded at the rest of what Kain had to say before walking back over to Zora. "We're staying here for a bit, Zora. These people need our help."

“It's about time you got done talking with that old man.”
"We're staying here for a bit, Zora. These people need our help."
“What!? Oh I should have known you'd do something stupid like this. What did you get us into this time?”
