Zabuza was born and grew up inside the Hidden Mist Village. He was named after the great Zabuza Momochi, one of the Seven Swords Men of the Hidden Mist Village. He was in the academy for just about the regular amount that is spent by most everyone else. Entering at about 5 to 6 and graduating at about 11 to 12. Nothing extraordinary happened to him during those years, though many kids stayed away from him because of his name and the past ninja to have it. He passed at just above average, and faced a boy that he never saw eye-to-eye with, so facing him in the Chunin exams were more than a piece of cake for him. Defeating him in just under 13 minutes.
His teen hood was very normal for a Shinobi. Nothing to traumatic happened to him until the age 15, when he lost his family in a house fire. He was away on a mission that day, and didn't come back until the following week. When he returned from his mission he was not told the news, because the courier didn't reach him in time before Zabuza could make it to his house. Coming across the house himself with no prior knowledge, infuriated him, though he didn't show it. After an explanation from witnesses he didn't know how to control any of his emotions. He gained high anxiety and some mild depression for a few months. Because of his feelings he didn't do anything. He never trained, he stopped doing missions, he just sat on the shore line of the Mist.
It wasn't until some friends dragged him along on a training exercise that he realized that training was a very effective way for him to vent his emotions. Giving his training 110%, his anxiety levels went down and he started to have a more positive out look on himself. After a few months of training extensively he signed up for missions again. Completing them gave him a sense of pride and made him never want to give up like he wanted to when his family had died.
One day he was reflecting on a mission when a gate opened up in front of him and sucked him inside.
