A magical girl, or "Puella Magi", is an adolescent girl gifted with powers granted by making a contract with an Incubator. The terms of the contract are that the Incubator will grant the girl one wish, and in exchange, she will use magic to fight against witches. Witches are non-human entities generally perceived as evil. They inhabit hidden private worlds and are therefore not normally visible. If left alone, they affect humans by giving them marks known as "Witch's Kisses" , which cause accidents, disease, or suicide. Witches often spawn lesser versions of themselves called familiars. Witches' worlds are called barriers. Each contains a unique labyrinth, manifesting the witch's subconscious.
Kyoko is a veteran magical girl who's distinguishing features include long red hair, twin fangs and a voracious appetite, almost never being seen without food. She came from a poor church family and used her wish so that people would listen to her father's preaching; when her father learned of this, however, he went mad and killed everyone in his family aside from Kyoko. As such, she decided only to use her magic for herself from this point on, since using it for others will only cause despair. Having grown up in a poor family, she often has to steal food and hates people who waste it.
Kyoko is an extremely skilled magical girl. She wields a spear which can extend itself, split into multiple sections, and produce a ball at the end of a chain, which can constrict and hit others at the same time. She also has the ability to put up barriers to protect others or keep them from interfering. She initially clashes with Sayaka(another magical girl), however after some time Kyoko begins to sympathizes with her and tries to help her. This is partially because Sayaka reminds Kyoko of her past self, as she too had made a wish for another person's sake and tried to fight for justice. Thus, she wants to stop Sayaka from making what she believes is the same mistake and advises her to live a life of selfishness.
Even though Sayaka thanks Kyoko and admits that she misunderstood her, Sayaka refuses to abandon her ideals of justice. However, Sayaka's "ideals" were rather tainted. Because of the way Sayaka saw witches and magical girls, it caused her Soul Gem to become tainted, and Syaka began to go mad. Kyoko attempted to speak to Syaka one more time, to draw her back to sanity. However, Sayaka already appeared sane. She revealed her Soul Gem to Kyoko, which had became pitch black, and shattered. Because of the taint in Sayaka's Soul Gem, she died and became a Witch named Octavia.
Kyoko, in an effort to restore Sayaka to normal after having become a witch, takes Madoka(Sayaka's best friend) to Octavia's lair. Kyoko put her barrier around Madoka to keep her safe while she called out to Sayaka in an attempt to bring her back. After taking many hits defending herself and watching Madoka's attempts to reach her prove futile, Kyoko realizes that her plan wasn't going to work. She told Madoka that things were fun while it lasted, and she was sorry for how she treated Madoka and Sayaka. Another magical girl grabs Madoka and gets her to safety while Kyoko sacrifices herself to stop Octavia. Although her main intention of this was so Sayaka would not die alone.

Fate can be cruel, for it appears Kyoko's final attempt at an attonement in life was for naught. She opened her eyes to what she thought was a dream, but will end up a nightmare. What greeted her was a new world, with just as much, if not more danger than what she previously dealt with.
