Born in the African nation of Liberia, Jack was thrust into the turbulent era of the Liberian civil war in the 1980's. After killing his own parents, the misguided Jack was adopted by Solidus Snake who became his godfather. Jack was raised and indoctrinated as a child soldier, often subject to experiments and drugs to make him more manageable. Under Solidus Snake, Jack became a deadly killing machine, earning the monicker "White Devil" due to his incredible kill rate compared to other child soldiers his age. Jack proved to be a competent and superior soldier, becoming Captain of the Small Boy Unit at the age of 10. His skill with blades and the brutality he used in dispatching his enemies earned him the nickname "Jack the Ripper".
After the end of the civil war, Solidus Snake placed Jack in a relief center, however he was soon removed from Liberia and taken to the United States via non-governmental organizations. Here is where Jack found himself in the hands of the Patriots, who used him for experiments, namely implanting his cerebral cortex with nano-machines in order to have him function as a back up system for their optic-neuro AI.
As Jack grew up, he buried and suppressed memories from his sordid childhood. Although he still suffered from nightmares almost every night. After becoming a U.S. citizen, Jack joined the U.S. Military when he was of age and was eventually being recruited by the spec ops group Task Force XXI, due to his aptitude for combat.
After leaving Task Force XXI, Raiden was recruited into the supposedly reformed FOXHOUND. After several high profile missions, and team-ups with Solid Snake, particularly the Big Shell incident, Raiden came to learn that the Colonel of FOXHOUND was actually a Patriot AI, and that he had been being manipulated by the Patriots and their memory inhibiting nano-machines the entire time.
In exchange for the safety of his wife Rose and their unborn child, Raiden was sent by the Patriots to kill Solidus Snake. After claiming victory over Solidus, he had the nano-machines removed from his cerebral cortex, so he would no longer be a puppet to the Patriots. Raiden then went on to work for Philanthropy, an anti-Metal Gear non-governmental organization, founded by Snake and Otacon.
Raiden also offered his services to the anti-patriot group, Paradise Lost Army, where on a mission to retrieve Big Boss's body, he was captured by the Patriots. As a prisoner to the Patriots, Raiden was a test subject for exoskeleton enhancement surgery, where his head and spinal cord were removed from his organic body and grafted into an enhanced synthetic body.
With the help of the Paradise Lost Army, Raiden was able to escape from the Patriots, and successfully complete his mission to retrieve Big Boss's remains.
Raiden continued to work with Solid Snake on several more occasions, battling Patriots and Metal Gear's along the way.
Eventually, after a brief hiatus, Raiden began to work for a Private Military Company known as Maverick. He did many odd jobs, but his most successful operation was helping Maverick's recovery efforts to rebuild an African country that had undergone a bloody civil war.
Things soon changed quickly. While working for Maverick in Africa, Raiden was attacked by cyborg soldiers and Metal Gears under the employment of Desperado Enforcement LLC. After discovering the motives of the PMC, and after reequipping Raiden with a cutting edge full cybernetic body, Maverick sent their best man (Raiden) out to combat the evil PMC.
While pursuing Desparado, Raiden had abruptly lost contact with Boris and the others back at Maverick HQ. The loss of contact was followed by a distortion in time in space, that quickly swallowed Raiden whole. Once he woke up, and rebooted his system, Raiden came to the realization he was no longer on the Earth he knew and loved. Finding out that his new location was the Planet Genesis, Raiden continues to struggle against any injustice he encounters, but actively searches to find a way back home, in order to complete his mission.

- Superhuman Strength: cybernetic limbs can lift several tons with ease.
- Superhuman Speed: cybernetic legs allow for high speed linear and non linear movement approx. 60-70mph. Max speed unknown.
- Superhuman Agility: advanced cpu linked to brain allows for superhuman reaction time, aerial and land based maneuvering; allowing for feats seemingly defying the laws of physics.
- Superhuman Endurance: pain limiters and a durable cyborg body allow for endurance far superior to that of a human.
- Superhuman Healing: by applying repair nano-paste, high tech nanomachines can completely repair Raiden's body, provided that he has it on hand.
- Electrical Discharge/Manipulation: when utilizing the high performance capabilities of the cyborg body, Raiden discharges electricity as he runs and maneuvers at high speeds.
