The Basics
Name: Kikyou
Alias: None
Occupation: Priestess
Age: Unknown, but appears to be 18.
Species: Lost Soul, walking dead
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: 1429; 1497 (Resurrection)
Place of Birth: Unnamed Village in Feudal Era of Japan
Alignment: Good
Original or Canon: Canon (Origin: InuYasha)
Appearance:
Kikyou appears as a young woman in early adulthood, who is in no way unattractive. She has soft brown eyes, constantly appearing emotionless or deep in thought. She has long, raven-black hair which falls past her waist; normally seen tied back in a loose ponytail by a single white ribbon. She is pale skinned to the point of appearing to glow in certain lighting, which might actually be a result of her being nothing but a spirit in a clay body. Her normal attire consists of the traditional Japanese Priestess outfit; a white Hitoe (jacket-like) along with a kosode underneath. The Hitoe sleeves are long and large; flowing at the slightest breeze, with slits in the sleeves to allow for more freedom of movement. Red ribbon is weaved through the sleeves, merely for a decorative purpose. The crimson pants, or nagabakama, are long and resemble a skirt at certain angles. She wears simple white socks and rice-straw sandals; and a crimson belt, or Obi, on top of the garments to keep the loose-fitting outfit secure. She also wears a simple red string necklace, though the reason is unknown.
However, for obvious purposes, she will occasionally be seen in clothing which is more normal on Genesis; if only to make herself stand out less.
Abilities and Weapon(s)
Powers/Abilities:
Spiritual Powers:
Kikyou can use a wide variety of this magic, which is exerted through her own extensive spiritual energy. It is much like an aura of sorts, appearing as a lavender colored glow in most cases when in usage. Her spiritual powers work the same a put holy energies in Genesis, and can be utilized against all manner of foul creatures. Through the manipulation of this aura, she can:
- Create barriers which holds off or purifies even the darkest of energies.
- Break various spells, enchantments, and seals.
- Reflect dark energies by infusing her bow with the power.
- Infuse her sacred arrows to make them more powerful and fly straight, fast, and with true aim.
- See many things which normal eyes cannot, including seeing through illusions or other disguises; as she is, in a way, an illusion herself.
- Teleport short distances without leaving a trace (this happens in the anime a few times)
Purification:
Even the most vile of substances can become as pure as untainted water at Kikyou's hands. By using her own spiritual energy, she can:
Even the most vile of substances can become as pure as untainted water at Kikyou's hands. By using her own spiritual energy, she can:
- Neutralize toxins in the air, earth, or water.
- Drain dark auras into herself and transform it into holy energies she can use.
- Create barriers against evil auras which act as poison; and can make these barriers shift to drive out evils.
- Miraculously cure illnesses or disease by taking them into herself, when combined with her already extensive medical knowledge (herbal and modern medication)
- Make "normal" silver into "Blessed" silver to be used in creating her sacred arrows.
- And many other minor purification tasks.
Archery Mastery:
Born in a time where wars ran rampart, Kikyou was quick to become highly skilled when using a bow and arrow. She already has a low miss rate when using that weapon, and her misses become still more rare when her sacred arrows are combined with her spiritual energies. She can:
Born in a time where wars ran rampart, Kikyou was quick to become highly skilled when using a bow and arrow. She already has a low miss rate when using that weapon, and her misses become still more rare when her sacred arrows are combined with her spiritual energies. She can:
- Make arrows out of numerous different material to suit her needs.
- Fire arrows at high speed with a steady hand.
- Hit a moving target's eye from up to a mile away with flawless accuracy. (Assuming there is nothing n the way)
- Make immediate mental calculations to increase accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness.
- Draw, set, and shoot one arrow per second.
Weapons:
- Spiritual Energy: She can manipulate her aura/spirit for weaponry or purification purposes.
- Bow and Sacred Arrows: These arrows are made by her hand, generally with blessed silver arrowheads for increased effect on the unholy and tainted beings. These "sacred" arrows can be infused with her aura to create deadly projectiles which are more destructive than normal arrows, and they can pierce through more than just a normal arrow.
Kikyou doesn't often use the blessed silver arrowhead projectiles unless absolutely necessary, seeing as silver can be rare in many places. She prefers to use traditional arrows with a stone or hardened carbon tip. - Soul Collectors: Not really a weapon, but they require some information. These are serpentine, white, dragon-like creatures with legs which resemble an insects. They have blue-pupil crimson eyes, as serve as the primary way Kikyou sustains herself and keeps herself somewhat alive. She can summon many of these servants at will, though she normally has no more than five or six at her side. They are elegant, beautiful, graceful, non-violent beings; whose purpose is to collect the souls of those recently dead and bring them to Kikyou. These are not invisible, anyone can see them and the orbs of light they bring their dead mistress; so she will usually leave town to "recharge" her energy.
Kikyou lives off souls of any creature, she is not restricted to human souls alone; though those certainly sustain her longer. Kikyou takes these souls into herself and separates the evils from the pure, purifying the souls in turn and releasing them to paradise in the afterlife; while she transforms the dark energies into holy energies which she lives off of and can use in battle. Soul Collectors cannot be used as offense; though they can constrict targets as a snake would constrict its prey, simply as a form of restraint. This constriction does not cause damage, whether the ones being restrained are dark and tainted or not.
Personality and History:
(Combined, as her Personality changes with her History)
"...To live is to die, To die is to live... I am a priestess who is unable to leave this world and reach the sacred place... No... That is not entirely the truth... Once I was a priestess. Now I am but a corpse with a cursed, false existence. No matter how much I desire to do good and help others, the truth is I live off the souls of the dead..."
Before her first death, Kikyou was a kind-hearted woman who took her duties as a priestess seriously. She was polite, respectful, responsible, and dedicated to learning the ways of a priestess. She would become among the most powerful of priestesses, if not the most powerful; simply because of how pure her heart was. Even her sister younger, Kaede, spoke of her having unusual powers. She would care for the most evil of criminals, she would help anyone who needed it; nursing them back to health or providing some form of help or comfort. Children loved her, they would flock to her in large groups to hear stories and to learn about many different herbs to be used in medicine, as well as what a priestess' duty was. The human heart naturally becomes corrupt very quickly in the human world, but hers remained pure and untainted. It was this purity which placed her as the guardian of the Shikon no Tama, a sacred jewel that was corrupt with all sorts of evils; which demons and other fiends of hell desperately desired for the immense power it could grant. Even in her duty of purifying this Sacred Jewel through her good deeds and untainted heart, she remained that compassionate and kind woman.
However, she was fated to die a cruel death; due to a supposed betrayal by a loved one, that was when her heart began to grow dark. She has fallen in love with a half-demon by the name of Inuyasha, who was one of the many demons who came to steal the Jewel from her. However, Inuyasha was half human, and so she could never bring herself to kill him as she had killed all the rest of the monsters who came after the treasure. But there was another half demon after the Jewel by the name of Naraku, a bandit Kikyou had once nursed in secret back to health after a terrible accident. As a bandit, Naraku was known by the name Onigumo; and he fell in love with the beautiful woman who helped him survive. But his heart was beyond redemption, and he wanted the Jewel and Kikyou herself.
Onigumo sold his soul to demons to become the half-demon Naraku; and set out to take his prizes. Through trickery of taking on the form of the two lovers, he turned them against each other; by making them each thing the other had betrayed him or her. The result of this clash was that Inuyasha would be sealed away, supposedly forever. The half-demons was pinned to a tree by a single sacred arrow through his chest, infused with a sleeping spell. But Naraku had gravely wounded her, pretending to be Inuyasha; and Kikyou died shortly after Inuyasha from the severity of her wounds. She passed on a request to her younger sister before death; that the Jewel be burned with her body.
Fifty years later, Inuyasha would be awakened by Kikyou's reincarnation; a modern Japanese girl named Kagome. Kagome was a reincarnation because of the Sacred Jewel's will; it had no intention of remaining forever sealed away along with Kikyou's body. Kagome would arrive in the world, and the Shikon no Tama would emerge from her side in a battle against a demon. However, in another battle against a different demon; Kagome shattered the Sacred Jewel in thousands of shards; which would be scattered across the world. Inuyasha and Kagome would embark on a journey to retrieve each shard and remake the Jewel; while Kikyou continued to rest in death; never truly able to move on to the afterlife due to the hate she had died feeling toward Inuyasha.
Kikyou would rise from the dead when an Oni Witch by the name Urasue took her remains from the grave, and created a body made of clay and bones to be the dead priestess' new body. However, as Kikyou's soul had already been reincarnated in Kagome, the body was empty and useless. Inuyasha and Kagome would confront Oni to discover why the remains had been taken from Kikyou's grave, and Kagome lost part of her soul when Kikyou came too close. Kikyou reabsorbed only part of her reincarnated soul; but enough to be able to resume a half-life. Due to having only part of her soul, Kikyou would rely on Soul Collectors, spiritual messengers of the dead, to bring her the souls of other lives in order to sustain herself and keep her bound to life. Upon being reborn with part of her soul, she developed a strong attachment to earth, she didn't want to be dead yet... Not until she had gotten her revenge on Inuyasha for his "betrayal."
Kikyou would become cold-hearted and cruel in her hunt for revenge, not willing to come too close to Inuyasha because Kagome was always there. To be too close to Kagome would mean she lost what little bit of her own soul she had. Kikyou would continue to hate Inuyasha, until she learned the truth behind who had killed her. Once she knew it was Naraku, her hate would be redirected at that half-demon; and she slowly slipped back toward what she had been before death. She wanted to help everyone she could, to save as many lives as possible; if only to make up for all those souls which were lost to her body into order to remain attached to the world of the living. She was the walking dead, and experienced conflicting feelings about it.
As time progressed and she watched Inuyasha and Kagome more closely; she began to feel jealous; knowing that Kagome was starting to replace her as Inuyasha's love. While dead, Kikyou had once been human, and so jealous was one of the many human emotions which remained with her. She would grow cold to both Inuyasha and Kagome, while she continued to try and help everyone else she could; saving lives, destroying demons with her spiritual abilities, saving the living from illness... She was powerful and feared by Naraku. And still, her hatred for Kagome and Inuyasha would grow; until she witnessed first hand how much Kagome loved the half-demon. After witnessing that, Kikyou began to grow soft again; even helping the pair on numerous occasions, if only from the shadows and anonymously.
Toward the end, Kikyou finally accepts the fact that she is, after all, dead; and that Inuyasha was in the world of the living. She would give him up to Kagome, and move on to attempt to battle Naraku on her own. That battle would be her last, and she would die again at Naraku's hands. But she had left her legacy, and a certain help from her was left behind in death. Without that help, Inuyasha and Kagome would never have been died as well in a battle with Naraku. In the second death, Kikyou had finally given up her hate; knowing Inuyasha and Kagome would avenge her by killing Naraku. She was at peace, and ready to finally move on to the afterlife she had so longed for. She gave her farewells and began her journey...
Only to find something unexpected when she opened her eyes... She was in a new world, a strange world, a world writhing the the iron grip of war; with demons and other vile creatures running rampant. She is is upset about still not being able to move on the afterlife, and she continues to live off souls while doing everything in her power to save other souls in turn. She travels quietly through Genesis, facing off against evils and wondering if she will ever truly be able to move on to the afterlife. But for now, she is focused on doing what she can to help this world, and wishes to wipe out as much darkness as she can; by any means necessary. She doesn't consider herself human anymore, she never did after her first death. But human emotions continue to drive her actions, and she is once again that kind-hearted woman she once was; though she is quick to become less compassionate in the face of enemies as a result of that past hatred. She hates war, and wants it to end.
