History:
The earliest memory Merida had was a picnic with her mother and father when she was six years old. When King Fergus placed his bow on the table, her mother rebuked him for his poor manners, but the little red head was amazed by the sight of it. Smiling ear to ear, she picked up the large weapon and begged her parents to let her shoot an arrow. Surprisingly, her father gave her, her own, and she immediately started practicing. When she misfired, she ran into the woods to retrieve it, but briefly got lost. That was when she first encounterd the Will o' the Wisps. They led her out of the woods, and her mother said something she'd never forget: "they lead you to yer fate". That was when Mor'du attacked. He was a fierce, giant bear with weapons sticking out of his hide, and a force to be reckoned with, and King Fergus knew this well. He shouted for Eleanor and Merida to run...
Ten years later, things have changed for Merida. She had expectations, responsibilities, and her mother rarely gave her the freedom to be what she wanted. Oh, and did I forget to mention that she has triplet brothers who get away with everything? Talk about unfair. Her life was suddenly turned upside down when she heard something she dreaded: marriage. The clans were coming to compete for her hand! Whether she liked it or not, she was dolled up by her mother days later, and had to put up with the introduction of the suitors. But, she saw her chance when Eleanor said that the "firstborn of every clan" got to compete. She was firstborn! Archery was the competition she chose, and she boldly walked in, shouting she will now shoot "for her own hand"! She amazed many with her skill, but also irritated them--she had gone against tradition!
After her and her mother fought (she tore apart the tapestry Eleanor had woven, severing the connection she had with her in the image) she ran away from home, and found herself surrounded by stones. Then, the wisps returned for a second time in her life, leading her to a wood carver's house. Turns out she was a witch, and in exchange for her pricey necklace, Merida bought all of her merchandise and one spell to change her fate. The old woman gave her a pastry after it was complete, and later, she gave it to her mother. What she didn't expect was for her to...turn into a bear. After an interesting squabble in the castle, they escape to the wilds. Alas, the witch was gone, but left a message on how to break the spell: "Fate be changed, look inside, mend the bond torn by pride". Merida didn't understand, and exploded the hut while trying to find answers. Oops.
Despite this, they make the best of it, and her mother begins to enjoy a life without the restrictions of royalty expectations. Best of all, mother and daughter grew closer than they have been for almost eight years. But there was a problem. Eleanor was becoming a real bear "on the inside". Again, the wisps appear, and take them to the lair of Mor'du where they learn an awful truth: Mor'du wanted a spell to change his fate when he was human, and was also turned into a bear. Merida found the answer: she had to fix the tapestry. They sneak back into the castle through an old passage, and get to the room. Eleanor's bear-ways returned, and at the worst time, because Fergus found her shredded room. Still in her animalistic mindset, Eleanor lashed out, and clawed Merida. Horrified by what she had done to her daughter, she ran, and her husband ran after her with a hunting party while unaware tht was his wife.
To make matters worse, her brothers got to the pastry too, and they were also turned into bears. This detered them little from getting the key to Merida's room to set her free. Tapestry fixed, she saddled up Angus, and quickly went to rescue her mother. For the final time, the wisps appear, and lead her to the circle of stones just in time. While Merida fought off her father, Mor'du made an appearance. Upon seeing the horrifying creature on top of her daughter, Eleanor snapped. With a roar, she broke free from her bonds that the hunters put on her, and she viciously attacked Mor'du with a fierceness that left everyone speechless. Part of a stone was loose, and after throwing him against it many times, Mor'du was eventually crushed beneath the weight.
The sun was rising. Merida threw the tapestry over her mother, but to her dismay, she became a real bear. Crushed, she hugged her, and lamented over her foolishness. She admitted her selfishness had caused this, that her pride got in the way, and because of it she lost her mother. But, then she felt a human hand touch her hair. Her mother was back! Smiling and crying, she told her mother that she changed, but she responded with: "No, darlin'. We've changed."
From there, life was different. Merida and Eleanor did everything together from horseback riding to activities she once loathed. Yes, life was perfect...until something went awry. A strange light had appeared in the woods, and Merida had mistakenly shot an arrow in it. Curiosity took a hold of her, and she stepped through, only to find herself in a new world...
