"Empty creature from Ventus riven... to you, the name Vanitas shall be given." When Vanitas was born, he was much like Ventus. Vanitas felt terribly sad and lonely at being separated from Ventus, and longed to return to his heart. However, because of Master Xehanort, his emotions turned to hate, selfishness, and rage, and eventually became a burning hatred of himself. When Xehanort sent Ventus away to protect him from Vanitas' natural impulses to hurt him, Vanitas feels terribly lonely and upset, not knowing why he exists, and why he is so lonely. Whenever Vanitas felt emotions, an unversed is created. Vanitas destroys the unversed, but it causes a terrible, terrible pain for him, and the emotions he feels from that only creates more unversed. Therefor, Vanitas was stuck in an endless cycle of pain and suffering. When Xehanort told Vanitas that the only way he could be reunited with Ventus was to become the χ-Blade, Vanitas resolved to devote himself to that one task.
