So a while back I posed a question to my friend with some interesting results. The question I asked him was to create two separate lists, one for your top five favorite villains, and one for your top five favorite heroes. The list can be from anywhere, movies, anime, manga, books, TV, Roleplay, doesn't matter. Anythings open. I would challenge you to also explain why, but you don't have too.
Oddly enough the heroes were actually harder for me.
And now my lists:
Top Five Villains
1. Rau le Creuset (Gundam SEED)
Reason: What can't I say about this guy? I mean starting out you know this guy is nothing but evil, but maybe thats what makes him so captivating. He seems to truly care for those under his command and wants to see them do well. Which is odd giving the off feeling he gives you the entire time of the series leads to a really rewarding payoff in the last few episodes. I don't think hes great because you know hes a villain, the reason hes at the top of my list is actually quite simply. I love a villain who can honestly make you doubt the hero. Someone who makes you think “Maybe, it would be better if you won.” so of course for me this guy wins that hands down.
2. Sven Cal Bayang (Gundam SEED Stargzer aka Needs to be longer then 3 episodes. D:<)
Reason: Now this may be odd giving how little episodes there are in this series, but oddly they're mostly focused on this guy, or at least split between him. Now that may not make him a villain obviously, but it's just hard to see him progress through the (much to short) series. As much as it pains me to say it, it's hard to properly make this list without giving too much away. And since this is a really short series that limits even further what I can say about this guy, but his whole progression from childhood to modern day is, for me, nothing less then heartbreaking and thats why hes earned my number two spot.
3. Rosamia Badam (Zeta Gunam)
Reason: For those of you that haven't seen this show I will highly recommend it. The main villains in the story are Titans, and you can't help, but love to hate them. Rosamia where to even start with her. I don't consider her a villian in the sense that one normally thinks of one. Most of the actions she does, shes forced to. She was forced into becoming a cyber newtype which leads to a strain on ones brain that causes instability. As a result she also suffered seeing the horrors of war as a small child, this often leads to mental clashes within her which splits her personality between that of aggression and a childlike terror. She often slips into the later often calling Kamille (The main character) her 'brother' while he knows hes not he does nothing to stop this. It doesn't help that the Titan's brainwash her, not once, not twice, but three times in the series and each time you see her on the opposite side of the battlefield is more painful then the last. I wont spoil what happens in the series, but it leaves an impact.
4. Adrian Gecko (Yugioh GX; Anime)
Reason: Yeah, yeah. Go ahead laugh if you want. I really don't care. I really wasn't sure if I should list this guy as a hero or a villian. Obviously you see which side he landed on. Now I know Yugioh might not be high on some of your guys 'to watch' list, especially GX, so I'm going to do a favor and spoil it for you here. (Hint, hint. Those of you that play to watch GX may want to stop reading.) Adrian right from the get go is this cold ruthless person and you can tell that, but during season 3 he sacrifices the only person that ever cared about them, all in the hopes of attaining ultimate power to rule that realm. Thats right, you heard me. Someone dies....indefinitely, no respawns. He later challenges Yubel to a showdown, where she quickly takes advantage of the negative emotions left over by the sacrifice of Echo's soul. He reveals however that as ruler, he didn't want the power for evil, but rather to rid the world of poverty and suffering as a whole. The worst kicker is he sacrificed her knowing he loved her as well. And that in my book will always classify as a villian, to willingly kill the person you love. His fate however, after his defeat, is unkown as he is never seen again after season 3.
5. Grand Admiral Thrawn (Heir to the Empire, Force of Corruption, any other Star Wars I'm forgetting)
Reason: What can I say about this guy. I know three simple words. He. Is. Awesome. I seriously don't know what I can honestly say about this guy. I'm a little disappointed he never made it to a movie, but he was a part of the expanded universe and am I ever glad. Hes just a delight to see. His foresight in planning is almost unparalleled. After the Emperor’s death and the death of every other major Grand Admiral he reappears from the depths of the Unknown Regions with a vigor. He was the only non human ever given the honor of being awarded the highest position in the Imperial Army, thats saying something considering the Empire's extreme xenophobia. Hes always a delight to read, trying to plan ahead of his next moves and almost always failing to do so. But more then that he has a unique way of approaching things, he things that all beings can be figured out by the art they make and it works for him. Even his political 'defeat' in the Imperial Courts by him years ago was a set up so that he might begin conquering the Unknown Regions. His legacy was so great that even ten years after his death the name of Thrawn set planets shaking and alliances shifting. Definitely worth being mentioned.
Top Five Heroes
1. Kira Yamato (Gundam SEED)
Reason: What can I say, theres a reason this is one of my favorite series, not only does it have my favorite villain, but it also has my favorite hero. Right from the first few episodes you can tell Kira is different from most people you just aren't aware how. The thing I like about Kira as opposed to other to the other characters in my list is he seems a tad more real then all of them. As the series progresses, you he constantly reminds you that not only is a he a capable pilot, but hes a living being, someone with hopes, dreams, friends, feelings. He isn't something to just be used. Time and time again you get to see his inner struggle with himself about these fights, if he doesn't what will become of his friends? Of those he spent his life growing up with. Not only that he has to endure 'being a traitor to his fellow coordinators' even going so far as to have to fight his childhood friend to protect those he cares about. He regrets however, it's something I admire about him. He doesn't just pretend like the lifes hes taking don't matter, that it's for some greater good, some better goal. Each life he knows he ended he hurt someone just like him, someone with hopes and dreams, and it just makes the road all the more bitter for him to continue on. Eventually he has to grasp the fact of what he truly is, what he was meant to be, what his reasons for even existing are, and again it's just a pleasure to watch.
2. Shugo (.hack//Lenged of the Twilight Braclet; Anime)
Reason: Shugo isn't your everyday hero, I think thats part of the reason I enjoy him. Hes not the best fighter, hes not the brightest guy, but he never quits. His story begins when his sister whens a contest earning them both player characters (PCs) on the widely popular 'The World' a virtual reality game. However unlike most kids hes not very good at video games as a whole which makes him reluctant to play it. Indeed as the series starts you can tell he isn't as good as he needs to be, even getting run over by monster that even starters should have no trouble with, along the way he meets other people often having to count on them to do most of the work for him, while he still tries to hone his skills. His sister eventually falls to a virus in the game causing her to fall into a coma in the real world, and as a brother he grows worried and from there he truly begins his quest. So he easily earns my number two spot.
3. Soki Oni of The Ash aka Hideyasu Yūki (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Reason: I would like to say I have a lot to say about this guy, but I really don't. For the most part it's a pretty standard story, until you reach the end (Spoliers). His basic story is his father has been controlled by a demon and he plans to eliminate him and save the land of Japan. Along the way he meets several people that either help or impede his progress. Hes just a bit different in how he approaches things from most heroes. He is the reincarnation of The Black Oni, and he loses his closest friend towards the end of the game for a chance to stop the entire world from ending. He fights The God of Light and seals him away killing himself in the process, but only one would ever know of the deed, one who would never tell. It's quite a said ending to an enjoyable character so hes made my number three.
4. Roan (Ragnarok The Animation)
Reason: Now, this person is in almost no way could be considered a traditional hero, but maybe thats all he needs. Roan is one of the main characters of this series whos only goal in the series seems to be protecting his childhood friend, Yufa, whom he happens to have a crush on. He starts off a bit afraid of most things only looking to take on monsters he knows he can beat. However through the course of the series he begins to lose sight of his main goal even drifting in with a pack of thieves at one point believing that that he can gain more power and ultimately protect Yufa. (Anything past this is spoliers, but I like the development so I'll continue anyway.) He comes back just in time to see his childhood friends leave with her brother who is now controlled by the Dark Lord. Thanks to the remaining members of his party however he eventually finds her, only to be betrayed by her in the form a kiss as she slips a cursed ruby into his mouth. Roan finds himself unable to strike her down however for the betrayal and Yufa breaks the mental control she had held over her and she breaks the curse with a kiss of true love this time. The surviving group reunite and Defeat the Dark Lord. (Thanks to a certain merchant.) Sometimes you don't have to have big schemes to be an enjoyable character.
5. Sima Zhao (Dynasty Warriors 7)
Reason: First off, let me say I love Dynasty Warriors. I was surprised when I played the new one and they introduced this guy. I played through his story and found myself loving it. He starts out in the game being a rather lazy individual actually. He doesn't like to take leadership or responsibility and at one point when asked what it meant to him, he basically said it meant nothing to him. However after the death of his father and brother there is a void left in the government from where they had started their work of working towards true peace. At first he followed the Emperor's request to stay in one area, but eventually he grew to know what had to be done and what was expected to him. He even took the blame of killing the Emperor of China on his shoulders, all in the name of achieving a true lasting peace. It was then that he turned his attention to their long time rival, Shu, who for years had constantly been attacking them on outdated ideals, causing nothing but pain. His clever tactics however put an end to that once and for all ensuring peace. He even named the former emperor of Shu Duke of Anle.
