Name: Vaarn Karyus
Aliases: Venom’s Ire
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Species: Alien (Barabel)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Canon or Original: Original
Date of Birth: May 25
Place of Birth: Barab 1
Physical Appearance: Standing at a full two metres, his eyes slit-pupilled and yellow, the reptilian Vaarn is an intimidating sight to behold. His leathery hide is armoured in incredibly tough, tan and crimson scales; these are naturally so strong that a blaster’s stun bolts will simply bounce off them, not hurting or impeding him at all, but a painful regime of Sith alchemy has strengthened them to the point of being able to momentarily fend off even lightsaber blades and direct blaster bolts. His teeth are needle-thin, his fingers tipped in razor-like retractable claws, and he sports a muscular tail measuring a metre in length.
The Barabel commonly clads himself in his robes and armour, with slits in the rear for his tail and all of its fabric etched with cortosis armourweave to impart a great deal of protection. In place of a glove on his left hand, however, he wears a devastating Mandalorian crushgaunt.

History: Vaarn’s story is a common one, though perhaps not amongst his kind. Barabels are quite rarely Force-sensitive, and given their time-honoured respect for the Jedi Order, those of their young who can harness the Force are celebrated. Vaarn was visited by a wandering Jedi at the age of four when news was dispatched of his Force-sensitivity, and taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to undergo his training. The young Barabel soon proved himself an extremely promising student, with his prodigious strength in the Force matched by an imposing physical stature that filled out as he grew.
Years passed, and Vaarn continued to shine through his youngling training and the time he spent as a Padawan under a revered Knight of the Order. He accompanied his Master on numerous missions across the galaxy, experiencing everything from simple peacekeeping and intelligence-gathering details to pitched battles with Sith and Dark Jedi. The Barabel’s Trial of the Flesh, in particular, took the form of a brief and vicious duel with a Sith Lord with ended with the Bothan Sith’s death; but not before he landed a number of deep and excruciating cuts that handily pierced Vaarn’s scales. Within a month of this battle, Vaarn completed the rest of his Trials and was ascended to the rank of Knight at the age of nineteen.
Vaarn kept this rank for another seven years as he continued to grow more and more powerful. Devoting himself to his studies, with no interest in the responsibility of taking on a Padawan, he immersed himself in studies of finer Force techniques and mastery of the Lightsaber combat forms Shii-Cho, Djem So, Niman and the dangerous Juyo. He would often spend months at a time away from Coruscant, hopping across the galaxy from one solo mission to the next, earning a strong reputation for growing skill as a mediator and almost insurmountable talent with his lightsaber. No matter how perilous the situation the Barabel found himself in, he could always either talk or fight his way out, and no foe that saw his lightsaber brought to bear could ever best him. Even murderous Dark Jedi, who the Council began sending the powerful Knight to hunt down with some regularity, were rarely a match for him.
However, the more Vaarn travelled, the more injustice and hardship he witnessed, the more restless he became with the Order’s almost pacifistic ways. He felt they could do so much more to protect the galaxy if they were more proactive, but the Council had always been at odds with those who shared his opinion, accusing them of allowing emotional responses to their experiences to cloud their judgements about the duties for which the Jedi were responsible. For seven years, Vaarn grew more and more jaded, until he could finally tolerate the Order’s inaction no longer. Discussing his decision with the Council, he turned in his saber and left the Order on amicable terms.
So began Vaarn’s fearless ventures into what his peers had for so long shunned and derided as the territory of the Dark Side. Building a brand new pair of sabers, with magnets integrated into their pommels allowing them to be connected into a doublesaber, he began travelling across the galaxy to immerse himself in the lore of the Sith, training into himself the mindset of the Unified Force; the Light and Dark Sides were an irrelevance to him, compared to the utility of the Force itself and his personal intentions behind its use. His travels took him from Tatooine and Dagobah to the dark reaches of Dathomir and even Korriban, seeking out Sith knowledge that he might be able to apply for his own ends. He even made use of previously forgotten Sith alchemy techniques to strengthen his body, greatly hardening his scales and accelerating his natural healing.
As the years marched on, Vaarn grew from strength to strength, taking his new learning in his stride and keeping his skills constantly honed. He managed to keep the influence of the Dark Side tempered with the moral code to which he adhered as his sole guidance. If one were to place a label on the belligerent but well-intentioned warrior, one might call him a Grey Jedi, treading an exceedingly narrow line between the so-called Light and Dark Sides and forging his own grey area between the two, within which he thrived and did the galaxy one service after another with the resolution of civil wars and the elimination of tyrants in his own violent and efficient way.
It is at the age of thirty-six, stronger than ever, that Vaarn is now drawn into Genesis. A sojourn to the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim, near the infamous Maw Cluster, saw the Grey Jedi’s small freighter dragged into one of its black holes when it surged with an unnatural spike of power and the range of its gravitational pull extended massively. Vaarn was certain he had met his end, in the most undignified and graceless way possible… until he emerged on the other side of the hole, unharmed. His ship, though was much worse for wear than he was – and crash-landed on a planet in the midst of the totally alien system in which he’d appeared.
Gathering his belongings from the wreck, and immediately becoming sensible of several immensely powerful Force auras on the surface of this perfectly hospitable world, Vaarn set about finding out what had happened to him.

Special Abilities:
- Vast Force Sensitivity: Vaarn is a truly prodigious, enormously powerful master of the Force. A proponent of the Unifying Force theory, with little interest in the petty moral warring of the so-called Light and Dark Sides, Vaarn makes a point of learning and mastering any niche of Force power that he deems valuable to know.
--- Control
----- Tutaminis: The discipline of energy absorption and harnessing. Those who master applications of tutaminis can absorb energy from just about any source and safely dissipate it, channel it out of their bodies in some other form, or use it to augment their own Force powers. It allows proficient users to absorb everything from ambient heat to blaster bolts, and even catch and short out lightsaber blades with their bare hands.
----- Curato salva: The discipline of self-healing. Vaarn has mastered this application of Control, using it to keep his body at peak form, rapidly accelerate natural healing and efficiently flush poisons and disease out of his system.
--- Sense
----- Tactus Otium: The discipline of sight through the past, present and future; precognition at its most basic. Vaarn possesses a keen Force Sense, detecting every living being within several meters of him even at rest and pinpointing specific life forms from hundreds of kilometres away. He has also mastered a highly precise battle precognition, attained through a relatively calm focus upon the flows of the Force.
----- Force Meld: An intense form of battle meditation, Force melding allows a number of users to join their minds together through the Force, drawing strength from each other. Also known as battle melding, it often saw use by groups of Jedi in the heat of combat, utilising it to coordinate themselves with pinpoint precision and thus greatly increase their combat effectiveness.
----- Psychometry: One of the more difficult of Vaarn’s ventures, psychometry is the mental technique of picking up impressions of past activity surrounding an object or place through touch. Users see into the past of the subject as if they were there, experiencing the sights and emotions of the present people; as such, it is often used to track specific people by retracing their steps. Vaarn possesses somewhat of a talent for psychometry, augmented by his naturally heightened senses and his species’ traditional skills at hunting and tracking.
--- Alter
----- Alter Environment: The user employs various techniques to alter the weather in their vicinity using the Force, altering temperatures, air pressures, and manipulate already existing weather phenomena.
----- Telekinesis: The basic discipline of manipulating objects from a distance, this is the basis for such applications as the Force Push, Pull and Throw. Vaarn has truly mastered these on a huge scale, along with such variants as the powerful Force Repulse, Force Choke and Force Crush.
----- Combustion: The destructive ability to compel an object to explode through sheer force of will. The difficulty of employing this ability depends on the structure, density and vulnerability of the target. Vaarn made a point of mastering this for the removal of inanimate obstacles; with enough concentration, he has made the wrecks of small starships explode and melt away.
----- Force Bellow: The ability to amplify one’s voice through the Force, raising its volume to potentially dangerous levels. Skilled users, particularly Ithorians, can harness this as a weapon by unleashing destructive sonic shockwaves. Vaarn’s high-pitched Force bellow serves him well in battle, distracting enemies with a literally deafening scream or outright blowing them away.
----- Force Lightning: The iconic, destructive power of the Dark Side, Force lightning channels searing arcs of lightning from the hands. Vaarn commands a great and terrible proficiency with this, using it both as a vicious weapon that can blast multiple foes at once and as a localised anti-droid countermeasure, shorting electronics with precise bursts. He has mastered the power’s distinct variants, Chain Lightning and the devastating Force Storm.
----- Force Scream: A violent, often involuntary exertion of Dark Side power, whereby a user gripped by intense rage or grief unleashes a massively destructive shockwave through the Force, devastating the area around them. Vaarn has learned a unique level of proficiency in this, being able to knowingly harness this otherwise uncontrollable power and direct it against his foes; he once amplified its destructive might with a deafening Force bellow to shout down an entire complex of buildings around him, crushing scores of soldiers and Dark Jedi to death.
----- Force Speed: The user channels the Force to accelerate and maintain high sprinting speeds. Vaarn can put on immense bursts of speed to cross short distances in an instant, and maintain sprints of over thirty miles per hour for hours on end with almost no fatigue.
----- Kinetite: The user harnesses a sphere of restrained kinetic energy and hurls it at a target to batter it aside. Powerful practitioners have been known to flatten whole buildings with a single mighty ball. - Alchemical Bodily Enhancements: Vaarn’s body has undergone a number of painful Sith alchemy procedures with the aim of strengthening his body. These have toughened his scales to the point of being able to momentarily resist lightsaber blades; augmented his circulatory and respiratory systems to raise his stamina; made his muscles far more efficient and powerful; and accelerated his body’s natural healing.
- Tail Shedding: Barabel have the strange ability to shed their tails at will, having them decompose near-instantaneously at the base and drop off. Vaarn’s alchemical augmentations have particularly accelerated the rate at which his tail regrows after a shedding, and he has used this trick numerous times to surprise unwary foes when his tail was trapped or grabbed.
Weapons:
- Lightsaber: Vaarn’s doublesaber, its blades a deep jade green in colour, is actually two identical sabers with electromagnets in their pommels, which can be connected as shown to form the larger weapon. Vaarn frequently switches between them to surprise opponents.
- Crushgaunt: A weapon devised by the Mandalorians, the crushgaunt is woven from a reactive fabric that exponentially increase the wearer’s hand-arm strength, to the point where the gloved hand can crush bone and rock with ease. Armoured in micronised Mandalorian iron, the crushgaunt is nearly indestructible, able to even catch and block lightsaber blades with little damage. Vaarn has modified his crushgaunt, worn on his left hand, better fitting it to his hand and tipping the fingers in sharp claws. A great deal of practise and control allows him to wield his lightsaber in this hand without exerting damaging levels of pressure upon it with his grip.
