Never Ending Tomorrow [Garrus]

Kira had finished hiding away his Gundam in an area he had been working on in his free time outside of the city. He had meant to move it today, but it seemed he had been beaten to that. A place that would hide all the signatures coming from it fortunatly. After that he hadn't joined Imai and the Resistance. The living were all and accounted for, so it was time to attend to the dead. He found himself wondering back to the area where his Gundam had been stored. He looked around the area. As excepted the fires had long been put out. A few civilians had been hit as a result of the shrapnel. Some dead, some just wounded.

He made his way about the town helping where he could with those that needed the help, before eventually only those that died remained. The families of those that had died were already taking care of his destruction had accidently killed or wounded, but that still left the matter of the pilots. He looked up. Close to night already, but he still had work to do. He quickly found the reamins of the VOTLs. He pulled the pilots out despite the looks he was receiving.

He made his way to the edge of the city before digging graves for them. Unfortunatly he didn't know the names of the pilots. He finished just as the sun set. Afterwards he said a small pray for them. His time living with Reverand Malchio had influenced him. After that he sat down from them a small distance away thinking looking out onto the plains before it. It was all so peaceful and yet against it was a backdrop of destruction, but no matter how many times it was destroyed it would grow again. It was as if even if it longed for a world of peace. And yet he had taken two more lifes today. Two lifes that would never again get to see their families. Laugh with their friends, but he didn't have a choice when he had done it. It was either that or possible lose even more lifes. And worse of all he had created more hate. Hate from those that were related to them. Hate for taking them from them. And Kira knew that pain because he had felt it in multiple occasions. He didn't know where to go from here or even what to do. Eventually he would have to return to the Resistance, but for now he just wanted to clear his head.

Something on your mind?

Overhead was the rebel turian who approached the place where Kira sat and looked over to the burial site. For Garrus this was nothing new. It was cost of war, people were going to get killed and you could argue whether or not they deserved death until you were blue in the face. In the end it always came down to the same choice. You or them?

It'll eat you up if you let it.

Kira glanced back slightly as Garrus approached, but he didn't however bother to get up. There was a lot on his mind, but then again there usually was, but today it was about what had happened yesterday. In fact aside from the fact he had turned his head when he heard his voice it looked like Kira had ignored him entirely especially since his turned back around as he approached. He remained silent a few moments after he spoked for the second time.”Shouldn't it?” he asked him slowly.

”This is my third time fighting in a war. The first time I ever killed someone it was because it was that or death, but the experience left my stomach in knots like I wanted to throw up. I was forced onto the battlefield time and time again and I grew used to it. I did it because it was them or me. Them or my friends, but....” he said trailing off flashing back to images of just outside of Orb. His run in with Shinn. ”It's not that simple. When you kill someone it leaves behind hate. Hate from those that cared for them for taking them away. The natural response is to want to lash out. To get even with that person.” his mind was replaying that battle he had with Athrun. They had tried their hardest to kill each other for taking their friends lifes.

”It creates a cycle of hate which is difficult to escape from. In reality we aren't that different however.” he said. He believed that too. The same things drove them, but it was how they went about acheving them which caused the problem.

Garrus listened to Kira. Allowing him to vent out his frustration before finally speaking again.

A friend of mine once told me "You can't predict how people will act. But you can control how you'll respond."

Garrus remembered that moment well. It was during the mission for Dr. Saleon where Commander Shepard made a point of not killing him but because he acted in a certain way the Commander had no choice and Garrus questioned the point of it all. He never forgot those words.

Where will you go after leaving the Resistance?

Kira simply listened. He knew he was right, but that hadn't stopped people from trying. He didn't want to try however. He wanted more then that. He wanted a world where things like this. Pain, war, suffering, it was all just simply a past ideal. Such a world....most would consider it pure ideology, but he believed they were wrong. ”People, beings. They have the same basic desires and needs. The problem arises when it comes to how to meet those needs. Wars were rarly fought because one side wanted to just fight. Each side had ideals. It was those ideals the war was based on often times causing the break in reason, that gap between a peaceful solution and violent one.”

Few people fought for the fun of it. They fought because they had something to protect. Kira, Garrus, Imai, Kragen, Wedge and everyone else. He was sure most of them wouldn't start a war for no reason, but it became difficult in war. It became easy to quickly lose sight of what it was you were fighting for on the battlefield. Garrus' question had been one he had been expecting for some time now and one he had been putting some serious thought into. ”I'll continue fighting on my own if I have to. I can't stand by and let Vulture continue to lead, but at the same time I also can't support the path Imai is taking. So even if it's alone I'll fight for whats right.” he said. Not just Isafaro, but everywhere if he had too. He knew he'd be outmatched and the odds would be against him, but he wasn't going to abandon it just because it wasn't easy.

You understand that most likely means more death.

Death was inevitable in war. The Vulture wouldn't give up their power on this place without a fight and negotiations would only be met by more hostility. Garrus didn't understand why he continued to fight if he hated it so. Why not hang up the war boots and try to lead by example somewhere else where war was unlikely to find him? In the end it was his choice and Garrus wouldn't stop him if he wanted to leave. Although if he got in the way of the Resistance they'd have to deal with him accordingly. Through thick and thin the rebel turian was going to stay and keep Imai from crossing that line he himself almost crossed. Had it not been for Shepard he would have crossed it long ago.

Kira gave a nod his eyes and voice reflecting it even if Garrus could see his eyes. He wasn't eager to get back into war, nor was he eager to take another person's life. However if it came to that then he'd have no other choice. ”I know that, but there comes a time when words are no longer enough.” he said pausing to consider his next words. He looked up just in time to see his mechanical bird flying down as it perched on his shoulder. ”Orb will not attack another nation, will not allow another nation to attack them, and will not intervene in the conflicts of other nations. “ he said explaining the motto of Orb, but they were ideals. Ideals that needed to be stood for.

”The meaning behind it is never take sides in a war. Never start a war over differences in beliefs or race, and always try to find another way out other then war. If you have to fight, do so for basic rights.” he said. While Orb was typically a peaceful nation it would fight for those basic rights of people. It needed power to protect those ideals and yet with it they became a target. The same could be said of any nation. ”While the ideal world would be where words could solve everything the reality of it is sometimes that just isn't possible.” There are those who think their naturally better then others. Vulture was one of them. In the first war he had fought it had been two such people and at the end of it he had to kill one of them to prevent another war. A war which had happened anyway.

It was the same basics that the Isafaro Resistance was founded under. Only Kira didn't agree with the way Imai approached it. He was sure if Kira applied himself then he could recruit others so he wouldn't be fighting the Vulture alone. And who knows? Maybe they'll be together in the final charge against Vulture to end this conflict once and for all.

Get things done and people will follow you. You'll be fine."

Garrus took out a radio and then tossed it to Kira.

"That's so you can call me on a private frequency whenever you feel like chatting.

[Kira Yamato]

Kira knew he was right. It was why people followed Imai, and why people had followed Lucas in the first and second war. She had known what was right and so had he. They had fought for it even if it was just a handful of people trying to change the course of an entire war they still fought for a better solution then wholesale slaughter. But of course he knew Imai was fighting for that goal as well, but it was how she was fighting for it that matterd more then anything.

Kira blinked as Garrus tossed him a small radio. Kira offered him a small smile. ”Thanks. I'll be sure to keep in touch.” he said pausing for a few seconds before thinking of how to continue the conversation putting the device away, ”So what did you do before you came here?” he asked hopefully trying to move the conversation in a better direction. It was all well and fine to talk about these type of things, but to be weighed down by them was another. Kira wasn't proud of what he had done in the past, but he hoped others could learn from it and avoid the same mistakes he had made.

I was stationed on a planet called Omega. A place ran by gangs and corruption. Before that? I flew around the galaxy with a good friend of mine who you might have seen around the old base. Commander Shepard. I learned a lot from him.

Ah, the good old days. Well, if you call them the good old days. There certainly weren't anything good about the situation with Saren or the situation on Omega. But if he had to do it all over again? He wouldn't change a thing.

What about you? I assume you and that Gundam have seen plenty of action in your time.

[Kira Yamato]

A planet? They have never made it that far. Just a little outside the moon was the furthest that had been colonized. He actually had met Commander Sheperad a few times. He was an interesting person to say the least. ”More than it.” he admitted. Garrus had told a little about himself so it was only fair he returned the favor. ”In a three year period I found myself involved in two different wars. And somehow between them wound on all five major forces In four of those four I found myself in some sort of leadership position.” he said almost seeming sad by that fact. An Admiral for Orb; white Uniform which answered under the concil and FAITH members in ZAFT; the Three Ships Alliance, and Terminal, both of which he helped found. Those where the four where his skills had been recongized. Skills at first he had crused, but he could use them to protect those that couldn't. It was something he had grown used too, and thankful for. To say Kira couldn't see beyond the now or couldn't plan was an understatment, but it wasn't something he liked doing. He'd rather there be no need for it altogether.

The last faction was the Earth Alliance who were never big on Coordinators. ”If you can believe it before that I was a student in college. ” he said, he always had the professors asking for help with this or that program. It was tiring, but even now if the whole world could be that way he wouldn't mind. Those days had been so much more peaceful back then. Back then the war had seemed so far away. That was the day that everything changed however. ”It's actually called a G-Weapon. Gundam is just the acronym that appears when it starts up. And it sound better....” he said trailing off. Weapons were to be used for killing, but that wasn't it's purpose. It's purpose was to protect, to defend. So he liked it a bit better.

You don't sound too thrilled about it.

Said the rebel turian stating the obvious. The closest he came to command officially was under Commander Shepard where he was assigned as leader once or twice. Unofficially he was Commander of the unit back on Omega during their clean up of the gang there. A unit now broken.

Garrus Vakarian
Before Omega I was with Commander Shepard aboard the Normandy chasing a fellow turian turned traitor by the name of Saren halfway across the galaxy. He was leading an army of sentient machines known as the geth who worshiped another race of sentient machines called the Reapers who wiped out all life in my universe centuries ago. It wasn't an official war but it might as well have been. We managed to stop Saren from summoning the Reapers but the Reaper threat remains an ignored concern in my universe. But it's been so long since I had contact with anyone in my universe to know for sure. Commander Shepard is as much in the dark about home as I am.

Kira was simply silent for a few seconds. How was he supposed to respond to that. ”In a way it was an honor and yet.....Being recongized for you ability to fight a war. It'd be a much better world if war never existed. I just wish, it would hurry up and end already.” he said as his birde tilted his head almost seeming to understand. It wasn't something Kira was proud of. It was something he was created for, but that didn't mean he had to enjoy it.

Omega? He assumed it was probably some faction where he was from. A small smile crossed Kira's as he spoke next. ”Everyone here is worried about something they left behind, but sometimes....You just have to have faith. We do what we can with the information we've been given. It's all anyone can ever do.” he said. He himself was no exception. His sister was exceptionally hotheaded. And tensions were still high been rogue factions, but all he could do was have faith that she was okay and doing well. Hopefully Garrus could have that same faith in those left in his realm.

I suppose you're right."

Garrus heard a beep on his radio and lifted it up to his ear.

Garrus Vakarian
Garrus here. I see. I'm on my way.

Garrus lowered the radio and turned back to Kira.

Garrus Vakarian
I'm afraid I have to go. You take care of yourself, Kira.

[Kira Yamato]

Kira just watched as Garrus pulled the radio to his ear. He gave him a nod. He supposed he himself had things to take care of. He slightly shifted to stand. It did one well to reflect on the past, to remember what it was they were really fighting for, however one also had to remember to move on when the time was right. ”Yeah, I'll head back in a bit.” he promised. There was only a little more he had to do here. After Garrus left Kira turned back to the two graves. His small birdie left shoulder and fell in the air. Kira lingered a few minutes longer before turning away. Someday, this would all end. No war, no death, no pain. And until then Kira would fight for that day, to do what needed to be done for those he cared about. Working towards that day one step at a time. He had killed so many people already, hurt so many others already. He had been unable to protect so many already, and he refused to stand aside and do nothing, after all he had the power to make a difference. The power to make a change for the better, and he was going to put it to good use. Any who visited the site soon after would find two flowers on each of the graves respectively as a soft wind seemed to blow.
