History: Born the son of archaeologist Sven Nelson, Kent Nelson followed in his father's footsteps. During the 1920s, Kent discovered an underground pyramid on an archaeological exploration in the Valley of Ur. Within rested Nabu, an ancient immortal held in suspended animation. Kent released Nabu, but a poison trap sprung in so doing killed Kent's father. Nabu had carefully engineered this behind the scenes to acquire a new host.
Nabu mentored the young Kent in the ways of magic and the secrets of the universe, granting him great power and taking his mind off of his grief. Kent served as agent of Lord Order in the battle against the Lords of Chaos, and receive the Vestments of Fate from Nabu, becoming Doctor Fate. As Fate, he went on many exploits and adventures, though he often recalled little of them, as Nabu "guided" him during his battles and trials. He would soon meet the beautiful Inza, the woman who would become a long-time romantic partner. Inza would be used against him in his first major battle, as the sorceror Wotan tried to strike at Fate through her, but was foiled.
Doctor Fate would encounter the Spectre at some point, and together they would destroy a netherworld gateway. During World War II, Doctor Fate would team up with several of the Mystery Men to defeat an assassination attempt on President Roosevelt's life, and at his request, form the Justice Society of America.
The spirit of Nabu entombed within the Helmet of Fate was becoming more nad more possessive, and Kent abandoned it, choosing instead to don a helmet of his own design with no powers of its own. His powers were cut drastically by this choice, but he continued his fight as a servant of Order. He was forced to don the Helmet once more, however, to track down the missing Spectre. He was forced to battle the Spectre, who was being controlled by Kulak.
Fate managed to defeat the Spectre, but lost the Helmet.
Many years later Kent would somehow manage to recover the Helmet, and rejoined the JSA. Kent and Inza remained unchanged by time's passage, while their fellow JSA members aged around them. The power of Doctor Fate had halted their aging process. Little is known of Fate's adventures and exploits during this period, but he did attend several gatherings with the Justice League of America from a parallel Earth, and battled against both Solomon Grundy and Psycho-Pirate.
Doctor Fate was also one of the founders of the new Justice Leage, where he and the League defeated Darkseid. His last adventure was against the Gray Man. Order and Chaos were at the breaking point, and the strain caused Kent and Inza to age rapidly. The strain on Inza caused her to commit suicide, and Kent was devastated and nearly sommited suicide himself, but the power of Nabu would not allow him to.
Kent was forced to remain alive and serve as Doctor Fate, at least until Nabu could acquire a new host.
