A Night like any Other (Open)

[Meryl Silverburgh]

It was just another night like any other. Meryl was out on patrol in a squad of five Isafaro soldiers dressed in the standard crimson colored military uniform and black mask which covered everything but their eyes but made it easy on the soldiers to breathe. They were all equipped with state of the art energy rifles and electric batons with an ankle piece and standard combat knife as secondary weapons. Meryl would have preferred removing the black mask over her head but it was mandatory for all lower class personnel to wear them while out on patrol.

Patrollers weren't usually expected to see any heavy duty action but that never stopped the army from arming them to the teeth. With outsiders randomly appearing all over the world it was impossible for one to calculate just where the next one would hit and what crazy abilities they would possess next. It left everyone on yellow alert 24/7. As the squad of five walked down the empty streets of the city at night a noise off in the distance would cause Meryl to turn to the dark alley across the street from their current location. "Hey guys, this way!" Meryl led the squad across the street to further investigate the noise from the alley. With their rifles raised, the Isafaro squad would soon find the source of the noise to be....

Kailix silently slinked across the rooftops for the time being following the same man he had been following before. A rather interesting individual, who had see it wise to steal from the Isafaro government. Not that Kailix was actually interested in stopping the highly illegal activity, but at the moment he was the source of entertainment. It was at that point the man stopped.

A smile played on Kailix’s face as he quickly transformed into some less recognizable, still keeping the same clothing, but an entirely different face. A simple illusion spell, nothing to complex as he silently made his way down from his current position standing behind the man in question. It was at that point he finally spoke. ”Why hello there You’re out late aren’t you?” he said simply as the man jumped.

Kailix just stared as he pulled out a gun and aimed it at him. ”I think, you’ll find that quite inadequate.” he said jamming the gun with just a slight bit of material so that it couldn’t fire. Sure enough the man pulled the trigger after that trying to shot him. ”Seems you really do wish to be caught.” he said as the man took a step towards him and raised his gun. Kailix’s smile slipped into a frown as he lowered himself catching the arm and sent the man sailing into some nearby garbage cans causing a loud clatter. Now it was almost guaranteed someone would come.

”You’re trying my patience.” he said as slipped his hands into his coat pocket as he turned to the source of the approaching sound of boots. Sooner than expected. Shame to, although the end result for this man would probably end the same. His smile had returned once more as Kailix returned to his original form and then the soldiers appeared just in time to take in the scene before them. An invisible barrier touched Kailix’s skin in the case that they decided to use those weapons first. ”Ah Private Silverburgh, I presume. Patrol duty?” he asked.

He had the advantage here in terms of knowledge. He had taken the time to read all their files. The ones that had any, of course how he obtained those files would probably make him an enemy of Isafaro, but mysteriously the people who had stolen the files had already been executed for doing. Doing so himself would be bad for appearances sake. He knew them, but they had never seen him before and likely most would never see him again after tonight. He tipped his hat to her and the rest of her squad acknowledging them waiting to see what they would do in response to the scene before them. He finally opened one eye to take in what they were equipped with.

"What?" Meryl held up her rifle towards the man and the others soon followed suit. "Who are you? How do you know my name?" Upon further examination there were a couple of things one could notice about Meryl. The most obvious was her stance, it shook slightly and this caused her aim to be less than perfect when compared with the others. There was also a hint of fear in her eyes as she looked the man up and down, not knowing what to expect as usually the people they find on patrol are you average run of the mill citizens who either run or give up easily. Last but not least, the safety on her weapon was still on.

Kailix chuckled at his own private joke as they raised his rifles at him. Indeed out of the two they found Kailix was probably more of a threat to them. Kailix wasn’t exactly in the business of giving out his name to whoever asked for it. Kailix cared not for the weapons that invisible barrier ready to defuse the bullets when they hit it. A smile crept over his face.

He walked not towards them, but the other who had attacked him earlier. He had scuttled back hoping to be ignored in all the confusion. ”I’m no one Private, but perhaps I might be the most important person you meet.” he said as he took something from the other man as he grabbed his hand. Kailix’s smile turned into an irritated glance as Kailix snapped the other mans hand.

The man screamed in pain and when Kailix turned around his smile was back. ”A better question would be. It’s still illegal to steal from the Isafaro government isn’t it? Punishable by death last I checked.” he said holding up a small data disk in his hands. He tossed it not enough for it to be threatening, but so it would land safely at their feet as he finally decided to address the Private’s current stance.

”My, my. I hope you’re aren't currently planning on shooting that weapon.” he said taking a step towards her. ”The way you’re shaking there’s no telling what you’ll end up hitting. Could be me. Could be one of the buildings around me. Might end up killing a civilian.” he said eyeing her weapon as he shook his head. ”My, my what do they teach people in basic these days.” he said shrugging to answer his own question.

”One last thing Private Silverburgh.” he said as if this was the most natural conversation in the world to be having with someone. ”You are aware that you can’t actually shot while you still have the safety on, don’t you?” he asked as the other man tried to get up and start running. Kailix let out a sigh. To kill that man himself or let them do it. Kailix decided not to wait as the man would suddenly find a Katar sticking out of his front through his heart as he fell over dead. Kailix walked over and calmly retrieved his weapon before going back to where he had been standing before his eyes closed once more.

Nobody yet perhaps the most important person she'd ever meet? "Are you even trying to make sense?" Meryl almost missed the other man that was guilty of stealing but this stranger took care of him swiftly with a katar. Meryl's eyes widened at the sight of the man being killed, only one of five soldiers who appeared affected by it. One of the other guards near Meryl caught the data disk and stored it in order to return it later. Now that the only person standing before them was the mystery man, Meryl's mind went back to all the thing he had said about her as she narrowed her eyes at him. "Watch it. You're still an unidentified man out pass curfew and we have orders to throw your sort in jail." Meryl turned the safety off and attempted to straighten the rifle she hoped she wouldn't have to use.

Kailix raised an eyebrow at her question. ”Let’s just say my name probably won’t matter much to you.” he said shrugging. To be honest he was making perfect sense if one thought about it. He knew everything about anything. That in and of itself made him a very important person. And yet to a person like her his name would be a waste on. It would mean nothing and they might not ever meet again.

He chuckled at her words. Eventually it actually became a laugh as he tossed his head back. It wasn’t especially an even laugh, but still it would have enough of an effect to send a slight chill to those who weren’t expecting it. When he looked back his golden eyes were staring at her. ”I’m sorry Private, but I have no plans on accompanying you.” he said as his barrier grew just a little. His eyes ran over the rest of them.

He was at a loss here. He could simply vanish. He was sure they weren’t going to let him go. His eyes were holding no filters for his next thought as they suddenly held a murderous intent. He could always kill them, but covering up their bodies would take more work then he wanted. Although he could always blame it on a scapegoat. Preferable someone who had nothing to do with the military. That idea was rather appealing now that he thought about it.

He tapped a finger to his lips as he studied the Private and her squad. He supposed however that would be up to them. If they were foolish enough to try to stop him then more than likely he would at least teach them their proper place if not kill them. ”Well, Private.” he said a hint of teasing in his voice. He was enjoying toying with her. ”Do you have any plans on actually using that rifle?” he asked quietly.

"I-I..." Meryl just stood there as the other soldiers waited on her orders to do something as Meryl was the highest ranking officer there on patrol. Some didn't agree with that but there weren't much they could do as for right or wrong Drake White fancied the girl and nobody was going to mess with someone one of Isafaro's top agents had taken a liking to. That said, Meryl didn't like people only believing her to be in charge here because of Drake and was ready for a chance to prove herself but her instincts, her instincts were telling her to back off. To run. While she wouldn't run she would back off as she slowly lowered her weapon and the others soon followed behind. I suppose we could let you off with a warning as you did assist us with retrieving that data." Meryl tried not to sound or look weak as she continued, "You're free to go."

Kailix continued to watch her as she seemed to doubt even herself. It was becoming difficult for her to reach a decision it seemed. Not that he minded. It was actually enjoying watching the inner turmoil she was having, but eventually she spoke. And a frown for once crossed his face. He’d been hoping for more. He simply lifted his hands and shrugged. The one good thing about it meant he didn’t have to find a scapegoat.

But for him it was obvious there was another reason behind it. People didn’t normally like the unknown. There was a fear of that which wasn’t known. And at the moment he was very unknown to her. He was virtually unknown to everyone, but he would rather keep it that way. It was also easy to tell seeing as how they hadn’t actually checked the disk yet, but it was of interest. Particually to opponents of Isafaro.

It was a schedule of the top ranking individals in the army. Including a certain Drake White. Of course now that it was back in Isafaro hands and the person who knew the information dead that just left him. ”How disappointing.” he said finally dropping his hands. Which would bring up an interesting question. How did Kailix know he had that? In the long run however her decision in this case made sense.

”So tell me how is Drake these days? Since you do see more of him then others.” he added quietly, but there was no need. After he had asked the first question the follow up statement was put directly in her head. Time to see if he could ruffle her a bit or not. Either way was fine.

Kalilix would quickly find himself at the nose of the rifle's barrel once again and this time with the safety off and a much more confident soldier holding the weapon as it was up-right and steady towards his face ready to blow his head off. "How do you know anything about me or Drake?" The other soldiers were at a lost of what to do but eventually decided to follow her lead and all aimed their rifles towards the man ready to fire if he made one wrong move. "Answer me!"

On the inside Kailix smiled. It seemed as though he had hit a nerve with that last remark. Good, but unfortunately for her his barrier had never wavered and she still couldn’t see it. He was waiting. Waiting for that first shot. For when they fired it they would soon find themselves with more than they bargained for he was sure.

He shrugged. Did he really want to answer her question? No, not really, but he would anyway in his own way that was. ”Come now Private. I said nothing about you being together. It’s simple a known fact that you spend more time with him.” he said still standing in the same spot he had been after he had killed that man. He slightly adjusted his hat as if the guns suddenly pointed at him meant nothing to him, and indeed they didn’t.

”On the other hand it’s rather simple to piece together.” Either she didn’t care about people knowing or he had hit a nerve. He was guessing it was the second one. He tapped a finger to his lips. ”I’d go as far as to say that the only person that hasn’t put it together is Ayanna.” he paused as if lost in thought.

”Perhaps you would like to include her in on this conversation as well.” he suggested. Kailix was very well informed about his information. She was a sad excuse for a leader it seemed. He knew there were others here that might be able to keep their calm much better.

"That is not what I meant!" Meryl meant how did he know anything about the two individually not as a couple. Dammit how did I get in this mess? Knowing how splendidly her luck was he knew exactly what she meant by that question and just spun it around to further aggravate her and it was working like a charm. Then he mentioned the last name she wanted to hear right now. Ayanna. How would he able to include her in this conversation? What was he? No, she wouldn't let him have any more of the power. "That's it! You're coming with us! Cuff him!" The others kept their rifles on him as one put his away and brought out a pair of cuffs and his electric baton approaching the man and threatening to use the baton if he didn't come quietly. He then moved to cuff him when suddenly.....

Kailix grinned it seemed he was hitting everything he needed to at the moment. More amusement for him. And she was reacting just perfectly wasn’t she? Now the real question was weither what to do about them. His eyes showed no hint of it, but perhaps he could make the good Private here the scapegoat. It wouldn’t be that difficult. And given her connection with Drake she probably would avoid death. Assuming she didn’t fight her arrest that was.

Perhaps he would do that, but he kept his smile inward as she called for his arrest. Perhaps for the last name he had given out. It was more of a smirk now really. Things were just going perfect. Unfortunately they were going perfect for him, not her. As the solider approached him it would seem as if Kailix wasn’t going to do anything, despite all his words. That was until the solider began to reach with the cuffs.

Suddenly Kailix was behind him a quick jab with the blunt side of his Katar to the back of his neck. Not killing him, but having enough force to put him out of the fight. He turned his gaze back to the remaining four. His gaze mostly focused on Meryl now. ”I already told you Private. I have no plans on accompanying you.” he said. His barrier had never dropped and it was seeming like now she would have no choice left, but to attack. Unless she decided to re-think her position.

Meryl gasped and narrowed her eyes as she held up her rifle and gave the order, "Fire!" Meryl and the other three remaining officers under her command open fired on the man but they would find that their energy blasts were doing nothing to the target in front of them. When they saw he was still standing after energy beam powerful enough to fry him was unaffected there was only one conclusion to be made. "Shit! He has a shield. Get back!" The four spread out from the alley and kept their rifles raised. One made a run for the fallen comrade and dragged him away as Meryl and the other two soldiers kept firing from their energy rifles looking to penetrate what they assumed to be man-made force-field equipment opposed to one of supernatural origins.

Kailix did let out a grin now. Of course if she wanted to look like a real leader it was the only real option she had. Kailix didn’t even react. At least that they could see, but one stray bullet strayed from it’s path. What then was its target. The already deceased man behind them, whose wounds that Kailix had inflicted were gone. In its place a single bullet hole now remained.

He was enjoying this. He pulled out his second weapon finally as something odd happened. The solider that was coming to retrieve their fallen comrade was suddenly thrown to the side by seemingly nothing. Right into the path of an oncoming bullet. Kailix grinned now the basic setup was done. Too bad he couldn’t kill the rest.

He lightly twirled one in his hand tossing it up and down slowly walking towards the remaining three. As they continued firing their bullets would find it had no effect. They hadn't made the connection it was a magic barrier. He suddenly appeared almost instantly next to one delivering a swift blow his stomach as he doubled over and collapsed unable to breath as his gun went off a few more time hitting the surrounding area.

Kailix would then appear behind the next one hitting one of his sensitive pressure points, causing the man to not only cry out in pain, but also collapse. That just left the Private. He appeared behind her carefully of her since he knew she knew CQC. ”Well Private, ready to call it quits?” he asked her no longer holding his weapons, but instead he just held his hat.

"Dammit!" Meryl turned to the right with her gun raised but the man was gone before she could do anything. When he appeared at her left she turned with the gun aimed but for a second time Kailix had alluded her and it was frustrating Meryl as her men were being beaten and there was nothing she could do. "Well Private, ready to call it quits?" He was behind her! Meryl performed the fastest 180 degree turn she's ever had to perform and fired the energy rifle at close range to the chest of the man hoping the barrier wouldn't work as well at close range impact as she was knocked back by the force of her weapon but kept her footing.
