Kari was defrosted, here's how it got frosted
Well, the idea I had was that the war between Kari and Isafaro (since they'd have to be at war, Kari was ruining Isafaro's advantage over everyone) was going very bad for Kari, and they were working on a super-weapon designed to pretty much turn the entire Isafaro Peninsula on the map into the crystal expanse, everything was gunna be levelled and frozen solid in the blink of an eye.
Absolute Zero Bomb, the force of the blast so powerful it actually insta-freezes everything within an area. Something went wrong though and the bomb went off while it was under development. Crystal expanse formed as a result, blasting the entire center of Jherra with the bomb's full force.
there were mass floods that froze almost instantly, creating massive expanses of super-flat ice and torential massive glacial spires from the rapid floods freezing solid.
the climate was affected as well, causing rolling snow-storms and turning much of the central planes of Jherra into a frozen tundra and bringing snow storms and typhoons, though also cutting Hallowton off from everyone else and keeping Isafaro and Jherrazad, two long time rival city-states, seperate and from engaging in open-war
moon valley, being where it was, remained unaffected 'cuz it's awesome, and any survivors from Kari went there since it was excluded and had traded tech for food supplies.
people survived the freezing because it worked like Cryo-stasis, they froze so fast and were unthawed so (somewhat) fast that it was like being in suspended animation, they didn't die, and when they thawed out it was like they had been asleep for so long
