History: Four years before the events of Birth by Sleep, Ventus served under Xehanort as his apprentice. Xehanort was planning to use the boy to create the legendary χ-blade, but Ventus refused to use his darkness to fight Neoshadows in the Keyblade Graveyard. So, Xehanort used his own Keyblade to forcibly extract Ventus' darkness from his heart, creating Vanitas.
Unfortunately, this caused Ventus' heart of pure light to begin fading away, and he slipped into a comatose state. Xehanort brings Ventus to Destiny Islands so that he can die in peace. Here, a newborn Sora's heart comes into contact with Ventus' own. The two connect, repairing Ventus' heart.
Xehanort decides to use Ventus to create the χ-blade, but he and Vanitas need to be of equal strength for it to work. So he sends him to the Land of Departure, to be trained under Master Eraqus. Here, he meets Terra and Aqua for the first time.
After passing out when Terra asks him about his past, the two learn that Ventus has lost all of his memories. The three of them began to bond once he woke up, and Ventus' broken heart began to heal. Aqua and Terra begin helping Ventus to train, and the three of them grow as close as family. They share a mock inheritance ceremony, and all three share the same dream to become Keyblade Masters.
Four or so years after Ventus first arrives to the Land of Departure, he wakes up under a meteor shower. Going out to look at it, he meets with Terra and Aqua; the three of them talk about the worlds, and have a brief spar in preparation for the Mark of Mastery tomorrow.
After Aqua gives Ventus and Terra Wayfinders, lucky charms that will always connect them to one another, they return to the castle.
During the Mark of Mastery exam, the orbs of light, now infected by darkness, attack Ventus and his friends, forcing Ventus to fight too. But eventually the Mark of Mastery exam ends, with Aqua and Terra fighting one another. However, Eraqus names only Aqua Master since Terra couldn't hold back his darkness.
Later that day, a masked Vanitas shows up in Ventus' room and tells him that Terra is leaving him behind. When he sees Terra again, he'll be a different person. Worried, Ventus runs away from home, chasing after Terra.
Traveling through the worlds, Ventus tries to catch up with Terra. He meets many new friends, and even fights the evil witch Maleficent, in order to save Princess Aurora's heart.
Vanitas, the masked boy, appears before Ventus again. He attacks, and defeats Ventus. Just before he's about to kill him, Mickey shows up and saves him from a devastating attack, healing him. The two of them face off against Vanitas together, and successfully defeat him. Vanitas tells Ventus that he's "on probation."
Finally, in Radiant Garden, Ventus meets up with Terra and Aqua again, defeating a giant Unversed together. However, the two of them have changed since Ventus last saw them, and they leave one another on bad terms. Ventus runs after Terra, and asks to go with him. Terra tells him no, because he knows that when he really needs Ventus, he'll be there. Aqua tells Ventus to go home, leading to Ventus running away again.
Traveling through more worlds, Ventus wonders about just what friendship really is. But he makes some true friends, and comes to realize that eventually, he, Terra, and Aqua will patch things up.
After meeting Yen Sid, Ventus learns that Mickey is in danger, and goes to the Keyblade Graveyard to save him. But Xehanort was laying in wait for him there, and tells Ventus that it is his destiny to forge the χ-blade. Ventus returns to the Land of Departure, but here Eraqus attacks him to try and prevent Xehanort from realizing his wicked plans. After narrowly being saved by Terra, Ventus is sent to Destiny Islands.
Here, Vanitas tells Ventus about how he came to be, and Ventus' forgotten memories return. Vanitas forces Ventus to come to the Keyblade Graveyard and fight him, otherwise he will kill Ventus' best friends. No longer able to play the pacifist, Ventus meets up with his friends there, and asks them to destroy him if he's forced into fighting Vanitas.
Moments later, Xehanort and Vanitas arrive. During the fight, Ventus is encased in ice and thrown off the cliff, with Aqua narrowly saving him from crashing into the ground. Just before Vanitas kills an unconscious Aqua, Ventus thaws out and engages him in battle. He defeats Vanitas, but Vanitas traps Ventus with the Unversed and possesses him.
Because the two have become one, the χ-blade is forged from their union. However, Mickey and Aqua fight Vanitas-Ventus, while Ventus fights Vanitas himself within his heart. Despite Vanitas' best efforts, Ventus triumphs over his darker half, causing the χ-blade to shatter into twenty pieces. But the battle takes it's toll on Ventus, and his heart flees his body, leaving him in a comatose state once more.
Sora's own heart finds Ventus', and the two merge together, granting Sora the ability to use the Keyblade. Meanwhile, Ventus' body is placed in the Chamber of Waking, waiting for the day that Ventus is able to wake up again.
Many, many years later, when Sora's heart is drawn into the darkness, Ventus' grants Sora's heart his Keyblade Armor, protecting him from being completely consumed by the darkness. He also appears within Sora's heart before Riku, asking him a mysterious question before disappearing again. It is shown that Ventus' body reacts to Sora's own joy, smiling when Sora is reunited with his dream eaters.
