Captain Log – Stardate: Supplemental. After a battle with one of Genesis' ships led by an artificial intelligence we have retreated outside the current solar system to regroup. Against my better judgment I have agreed to a deal with Q to assist in Genesis' affairs. I can only hope that our intervention will be able to resolve the current chaos with the dimensions conversing rather than damage the culture we're about to set foot in. I head now to Sick Bay to see Doctor Hannigan to discuss the remains we found during our exploit in the Downward Spiral.”
The doors to Sick Bay slid opened and the captain entered. Her eyes going over the rather large remains of the corpse they found that dwarfed the others in size. One thing she noticed that was different was a tentacle. Bigger than the human bodies but still smaller than the unidentified creature.
“Doctor. What do you have for me?”

“Yalea.”
The Doctor stood up from her workspace and came out into the main room now standing in front of the captain.
“I did several diagnostics and matched them with everything we had on file. I narrowed it down to only one possibility but first what is this I hear about an encounter with Q?”

“Never you mind that, Doctor. What did you find?”

“Are you familiar with H. P. Lovecraft, Yalea?”

“Are you familiar with H. P. Lovecraft, Yalea?”
“He was an author of weird fiction in the early 20th century. Why do you ask?”

“I ran every match in every database we had until I found myself in works of fiction, Yalea! The only match I found suggests that these remains right here– The Doctor pointed to the largest pile of remains in the room –“Are Azathoth's.”

“Azathoth, Doctor?” asked Yalea in obvious skepticism. “And who's the other one Cthulhu?” she jokingly added.

“I wouldn't joke about this, Yalea.”

“I wouldn't joke about this, Yalea.”
Yalea took a step back, her hands brushing off the nearby console as she was taken aback at the mere idea that these creatures could be from a 20th century short story as she looked back at the doctor.
“Do you have any idea what you're saying?”
Yalea stood up straight again.
“These are gods we're talking about. Not just gods but dead ones. What could have possibly kill something like the beasts you're referring to?”

“It could have been anything. It could have been nothing. Just a simple energy discharge from the tower. But if dimensions really are coming together here then it's logical to assume, though I sound like a Vulcan when I say it, that the universe H. P. Lovecraft made in his stories can exist and converse with the rest of them.”

“What's real anymore?” asked Yalea. Walking away from her friend and looking down to the floor. “If a work of fiction can be real – if these gods can be real then what is real? Yalea lifted her head up and turned back around to the doctor. “Are we real, breathing human beings or are we just the figment of someone's imagination – someone's short story published in a magazine?”

“Don't talk like that, Yalea. You and I are as real as we've always been.”

“Don't talk like that, Yalea. You and I are as real as we've always been.”
Yalea placed her hands on her hips, taking a moment to recollect herself before dropping her hands and returning her gaze back to the doctor.
“We're going back to Genesis' orbit. I have to meet Q on the tower to discuss the first place he wants us to intervene.”
The Captain barely managed to get that last word out of her mouth with how much she hated the idea, but there was no getting around it. They had a long road ahead of them.
