"Meaning?"
“You were able to deflect one of my own spells back at me during our training session. That's something only a witch could have done in my world.”
"Nimbus 2001?"
“It's a sports broom.”
"It's nothing."
“A snicker isn't nothing. I should know I do it all the time.”

Gabrielle figured it had something to do with the chakram. Well, it certainly was magical. The Traveling Bard figured it would probably qualify as a magical artifact in Zora's realm but she herself definitely didn't have any magical powers to think of. "I assure you, I'm no witch." Gabrielle raised an eyebrow at what Zora said next. "You guys have sports brooms?" And of course Zora wasn't about to let that snicker slide without a fight. "I was just reminded of someone I used to know just now. That's all."

"I assure you, I'm no witch."
“A right shame that is.”
"You guys have sports brooms?"
“It's for games like Quidditch and racing. Nimbus 2001 is among the best brooms there is so naturally I had my father buy one for me.”
"I was just reminded of someone I used to know just now. That's all."
“Who?”

"Would you have preferred I been a witch?" asked Gabrielle.
Gabrielle started to think back to her days traveling with Xena, back when she was the inexperienced sidekick. There was a man who went by the title of "Joxer The Mighty" a man with a good heart even if he did boast to have more than he actually possessed. Zora wasn't quite as humorous in her actions but they did share some things in common. "His name was Joxer "The Mighty" he liked to bite off more than he could chew too."

"Would you have preferred I been a witch?"
“I admit if you were a witch things would have been quite different... But there is a certain upside to your being of muggle descent. At the end of the day I can't complain.”
"His name was Joxer "The Mighty" he liked to bite off more than he could chew too."
“Now what is that supposed to mean?”

"Upside? And what would that be?" Gabrielle was curious to hear the child's answer. Before she wouldn't have acknowledged liking anything about a muggle anywhere. She knew she had left a lasting impression on the girl. Ever since their first training session together Zora had been a different person than she was when they first met. The Traveling Bard was interested to hear what her reasoning would be. "I think you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong you're not exactly as bad as Joxer was but you do tend to take on more than you can handle."

"Upside? And what would that be?"
Zora found herself at a lost for what to say and had now wished she hadn't said anything. Browsing through her mind for words to say to the Traveling Bard the young witch finally settled on these words,
“Though there is plenty of magic in this world a lot of how things work are very similar to muggle devices in my world. Having you around to figure how to work them is a plus instead of having to figure things out on my own.”
There. A satisfying answer if she did say so herself. And one that didn't cause the child to have to “admit” to anything in particular like she was assuming the Traveling Bard had wanted her to. She'd just have to be found wanting.
"I think you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong you're not exactly as bad as Joxer was but you do tend to take on more than you can handle."
“Name one time I took on more than I could handle.”

"A capable witch like you, I'm sure you could have figured it out on your own. Is that the only reason you're glad I'm a muggle?" Gabrielle observed Zora's face to watch her expressions. She had acted embarrassed almost from her last question. Like she was ashamed of being fond of a non-magical person. Her parents did a real number on her where her prejudice was concerned. If she wasn't comfortable admitting to these feelings yet Gabrielle wouldn't push the issue but it did sadden her to see such prejudice in someone so young. "The Netherrealm," replied Gabrielle to Zora's question.

“What do you want me to say?”
"The Netherrealm."
“Excuse me? I handled that rather well thank you very much.”

"The truth." The truth was always a good place to start. Gabrielle could live with the answer the child gave as long as it was a honest one. It seemed Zora was uncomfortable admitting the truth to herself. And that wasn't healthy. "Zora. It was obvious from the moment you stepped into that realm you shouldn't have been there and you refused to wait back in Moon Valley. You're stubborn and if you're not careful one day that stubbornness is going to get you killed."

"The truth."
“Are you calling me a liar?”
"Zora. It was obvious from the moment you stepped into that realm you shouldn't have been there and you refused to wait back in Moon Valley. You're stubborn and if you're not careful one day that stubbornness is going to get you killed."
“Well maybe this Joxer would have gotten himself killed but I'm far more capable than you like to give me credit for!”

"I'm not calling you anything." Gabrielle had to remind herself that Zora didn't know about Joxer. She couldn't have known. There was no way the witch could have known that he did die. He died protecting Gabrielle. He died a hero. Seeing that there was no further point to this conversation, Gabrielle pulled back from the ship's side and made her way for the lower deck. "I'm going to get some shut eye. I suggest you do the same." She didn't say anything more than that, nor did she give Zora a chance to respond as she was already headed down to the lower deck before the child could.

"I'm not calling you anything."
“All right then.”
"I'm going to get some shut eye. I suggest you do the same."
“Gabrielle? Is something wrong? Gabrielle?”

No answer came from Gabrielle. She was already gone in the lower deck and in her room. By the time Zora would make it there she'd be in bed fast asleep. They had a big day tomorrow. Tomorrow they left what took them a year to get used to to another continent which was largely unknown to its own people according to Kari's intelligence. Though that didn't bother Gabrielle. All her life Gabrielle had wandered into the unknown. Facing dangers that threatened her very life. Some times even taking it only to come back from the dead again. But now she had someone else to look after. Someone else who had many things to learn about life. Gabrielle wondered if this was how Xena once felt about her. With that thought she drifted off to sleep and thought about a time which, compared to now, was much more simpler.
