Name: Kaworu Nagisa
Aliases: Tabris, The Seventeenth Angel, The Fifth Child
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Species: Angel, though the term is deceptive.
Alignment: Neutral
Canon or Original: Canon (Neon Genesis Evangelion Universe; specifically the original series)
Date of Birth: 9-13-2000 (Earth years)
Place of Birth: The South Pole
Physical Appearance: Link~
Special Abilities: Sadly, unlike his kin, Kaworu is not a gigantic monster, or able to split himself in two, vastly change his shape, pour acid from his eyes, transport others to a pocket dimension, or probe minds. However, he is in possession of the strongest AT Field of all the Angels. This Field is his soul, which he is able to project for various purposes.
Levitation - By using the AT Field he can float above the ground, making it easy to bypass large gaps and also allowing a long journey to not take a toll on his human muscles. He finds this mode of transportation easier than walking, but he does not use it constantly.
Shielding - The most important property of the AT Field is its ability to deflect physical matter. It is conventionally used to block attacks that would otherwise be fatal, but he can increase its potency to completely block out any particles or waves from entering as well, in effect creating a secluded area of his own.
"Possession" - Kaworu is able to use the AT Field for more specialized purposes. He can take control of any substance made from Adam as long as the soul is not present, though this power is pretty much null as there are no EVAs or Angels on Genesis as far as he knows. He can also use this ability to bypass those pesky things known as locks and passwords.
Weapons: None
History: As said before, Angels in his universe are not the pretty, white-winged, halo-adorned servants of a supreme, monotheistic God. Rather, a bit of back-tracking may be needed to explain their origins. Long ago the First Ancestral Race, facing physical extinction, created the Seeds of Life to ensure a more spiritual succession. Two of these Seeds were Adam of the White Moon, who possessed the Fruit of Life, and Lilith of the Black Moon, who possessed the Fruit of Knowledge. The Seeds were meant to each travel and propagate on different worlds. However, Adam and Lilith both landed on Earth. One Seed would have to go dormant, and let the other flourish.
If Adam had remained awake then its children, the Angels, would have populated the Earth, their forms being powerful and varied as a result of the Fruit of Life. However, with each Seed there was a sort of safeguard against a situation such as Adam and Lilith's. These were the Lances of Longinus, which would send a Seed into dormancy. Lilith's Lance was broken. Adam was put to sleep, and the children of Lilith, the Lilin, better known as humanity, spread throughout the Earth instead, creating vast civilizations. They discovered how to manipulate the world around them, and explore frontiers their ancestors could not have even dreamed of. Yet right at the turn of the millennium, their insatiable hunger for discovery brought forth unthinkable consequences...
It was the year 2000, and the Katsuragi Expedition had unearthed a giant cavern beneath the South Pole. This cavern was the White Moon, and inside, Adam, who had been asleep for millions of years. It was then that the organization who had sent the party, SEELE, instructed them to conduct a Contact Experiment with Adam. Their goal was to attempt to fuse DNA from a human donor with Adam. It succeeded, but the Seed was awoken. The result of this was the initiation Second Impact, in which Adam formed an "Anti AT Field" and eliminated all life on Antarctica down to the smallest level. The sea turned red and lifeless, and the whole world was affected by the collateral damage.
Yet on that day life was created. That life was known as Tabris: The Angel of Free Will, Adam reborn in a human body. He was taken in by SEELE to be raised and prepared for his final purpose, for there was more to that organization's plan than just the wanton destruction of humanity. They were following the prophecy set forth by the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls, which contained instructions for achieving the Third Impact. This would dissolve the individual souls of mankind, bringing every conscience together in one form known as Instrumentality. They needed to follow the exact order of events in the Scrolls, including the appearances of the Angels. Kaworu was to be used as their final instrument; a lamb sent to the slaughter so their plans could be fulfilled.
And so the years passed, and mankind rebuilt itself. The Black Moon was discovered in Japan, and Tokyo-3 was built over it, a safeguard to prevent harm coming to the Seed inside. In 2015, on the same date as the Second Impact, the Angels began to arrive, drawn to Lilith. However, Japan had created its own defenses to protect against the Angels. Evangelions, giant mecha, were created to fight Angels, and were piloted by children born the same year as the Second Impact. They were integral to the prophecy, and as Angel and Angel came, the children fought and defeated each of them. Yet there were consequences. They went through much pain and suffering, all of them changed for the worse.
It was in the nadir of the life of the Third Child, Shinji Ikari, when Kaworu was sent with orders to attempt to initiate the Third Impact under the cover of being the Fifth Child, replacement pilot to the second Evangelion Unit, as its former pilot had suffered grievous emotional and mental trauma. In reality, of course, SEELE wished for him to be killed. However, he did not know that as he arrived at Tokyo-3. Nor did he know exactly who the other pilot was. His encounter with Shinji would change his planned destiny for all time.
Kaworu already had a fascination with human culture. He loved their music, their achievements, and their very souls. He knew fully well that he was not human, and he gained a desire to understand them. How were they able to press on in impossible odds? How could they live when the hearts of others only brought pain to them? Shinji gave these answers. The boy needed a friend, someone to rely on. He wanted to learn. They were naturally drawn to each other. Shinji was the pinnacle of everything he admired about humanity. He was drowning in the horrific hand fate had dealt him, but somehow he was managing to live on, despite his heart's fragility. In one mere day the Lilin has fully earned Kaworu's empathy.
If only it could have gone on like that forever, but the drive to unite with Adam, and his duty to SEELE needed to be fulfilled. The next day Kaworu seized control of Unit-02 and descended to where Lilith was held. Shinji was called to kill not Kaworu, but the Seventeenth Angel. The boy felt betrayed. He had trusted Kaworu all this time, and he was actually the enemy?! He chased after him with his own Unit, and after neutralizing 02, came face to face with the Angel, who was floating right in front of Lilith. Kaworu had been mistaken. He thought Adam was held here. Had he been tricked? It was then he realized what this meant. If he lived on, then all of humanity, beautiful, wonderful humanity that could go beyond the stars if they wished, would be destroyed.
But if he was gone, the Lilin would live on. That was why Lilith was here instead of Adam. It finally showed him the way. He requests that Shinji kill him, for the sake of humanity. After much contemplation and reluctance to kill the only being who had shown him unconditional kindness, he fulfilled the Angel's request, crushing him in the hand of his Unit. With this sacrifice Kaworu's kin would be gone forever, and by extension, through his origin by Adam, his own children would be gone as well. He was meant to hate the children of Lilith like the rest of the Angels and try to destroy them, but by his own free will he had chosen to do the opposite and love them.
Of course, what kind of story would it be if it were simply left with his guts all over the hand of a giant robot? For in reality the sacrifice became one of exile, not of martyrdom. As the hand began to close in on him, he closed his eyes, awaiting the nothingness of death. But it didn't come. The grip on him was gone. At first expecting that Shinji had backed away from the deed, Kaworu opened his eyes to see what was the matter. Instead of seeing the head of the Evangelion in front of him, he saw Victorian-style buildings and cobblestone streets. No longer was he in Tokyo-3 or even Earth, but rather in Hallowton of Genesis. Incredibly confused, he set out to explore this new environment and find some answers, and hopefully a familiar face or two.
