Mey Rin had only been out getting groceries and other such errands for the servants at the Phantomhive estate, nothing more. She had done nothing wrong.
It had been a year since the master of the estate, Ciel Phantomhive, aged now 15 years, had all but abandoned the estate. The servants were sent payments, but there was no other correspondence from the Young Master. They had also not heard from the head butler, Sebastian, who had left with the Master.
It was a dark time, since he left.
Mey Rin had definitely noticed something was wrong with the Earl, though she never could quite say what it was. He was... darker.
The servants had gotten along well, over all. It had been rough at first; Mey Rin had needed to learn some basic cooking because Bardroy burned all the food, though eventually even he learned how to avoid such catastrophies. Tanaka had replaced Sebastian as head butler by default, but he was increasingly losing his ability to be what the servants called "real" Tanaka (he constantly reverts into chibi form... yes, it is weird), so most days they just laid around the mansion, flabby, fat, and lazy. Still, Mey Rin enjoyed her company, with a few exceptions.
She and Bard had had a big falling out after they dated for about four months. They weren't really speaking, but they had gotten good at ignoring each other in spite of seeing each other every day.
She and Finnian were quite close friends, even though she had turned down his proposal for a more intimate relationship. She had not wanted to spoil her friendship, and he had not seemed to mind, though she did see his glances, and felt badly for turning him down.
She had been reconsidering, before....
She had been going about her errands when she started to notice slight differences in her surroundings. There was a shop that she could not seem to find, and one of the restaurants had gotten a new name... but when she reached the dairy shop... it wasn't the dairy shop. It was a tailor. She knew it was the same building, there was only one bakery for miles and that was it, right next to what should have been the dairy shop, and besides, there was the produce cart, about where it usually was--but on closer inspection of that, she saw there was a different person, one she had never seen, selling the produce. In fact... she did not recognize any of the store owners. She went up to the tailor and inquired, "What street is this?". He gave a street name of which she had never heard. She knew all the streets in London. She asked, "Where am I? I mean, generally, what corner of London?" "London? I have never heard of the place."
Mey Rin did not know how to respond to that. She stood there, completely quiet, just staring at the tailor, trying to think... really, anything.
"I... take it you are lost, Miss?" the tailor appeared concerned.
She needed to rephrase her question, she decided, but it took her a few moments to decide exactly how to do that. She still felt she knew exactly where she was, so many things about this area were familiar, she could not be lost. "Where... what is the name of this city?"
Now the tailor appeared quite concerned indeed. "Hollowton?" the inflection signified his uncertainty that he had understood the question.
"Hollow...ton?" she said very quietly, and the tailor did not hear.
Her mind was blank. She could only think she wished she had not gone out alone, and made a note to try to avoid doing so in the future. Indeed, she was already feeling that she was not going to be able to go into town alone again for quite some time.
"Miss? D'you need any help? Perhaps you want a map? Or perhaps an officer?"
She did not take long to respond, "A map, certainly."
As he was retrieving the map, she continued to ponder what she should do next: continue with her shopping, or go back home? It would take a rather large chunk of her time to return to the estate and go back out, but she was quite worried by this point, perhaps she just needed to do that. She had made up her mind to go back by the time the tailor handed her the map. Looping her basket of the groceries she had already purchased around her arm, she unfolded the map and began to study it as she headed back towards her horse and cart. The map indeed was labeled, "Hollowton," and while it looked familiar, none of the street names were recognizable. She knew exactly were Fleet was on the map, but she could not locate it. The one street that resembled it was named "Barker," and it curved south where it shouldn't have.
When she reached the stall, her horse was not there. The stalls were a different colour, and shape, as well. She asked the keeper, but he did not know what she was talking about, which was not a surprise to her at this point in the course of events. She walked in the direction of the estate, but had to stop for directions - several times, and no one knew what she was talking about. It got late, and she decided to grab some food; but they would not take her currency.
Thankfully, the owner took pity on her despondency and gave her some warm bread and soup. She lingered in the restaurant for almost two hours, at first asking around about London, but then giving up. Sulking. When the restaurant was closing down, the owner approached Mey Rin and questioned her further on how she had gotten lost.
"I know what happened to you," he said after listening quite carefully, "You have fallen through a portal. Many people here come through them; this planet is unstable, you see. Well... I suppose you don't. You will come to understand. For now, how about I set you up for the night? The innkeeper offers rooms for free to newcomers such as yourself, until they get on your feet, just try not to take long to do so. He really puts 'imself out sometimes."
Mey Rin was very grateful to have a place to stay, though she had no idea what she was to do. She went to the inn and simply curled up in bed, everything slowly sinking in.
Tomorrow, I'll have all day to find the estate... I'll ask everyone, someone will know.
The next morning, she set out to do exactly that, even though her dreams had told her to be very worried... the restaurant owner had told her he thought she had fallen through a portal, and though she did not know what he had meant, she felt there would be no falling back through.
