The military base they have taken for their own in Sector 4 was already proving to be superior to the underground base they had been working in for a year. Already the Resistance was growing in number and could now fight off the Vulture with their own armored tanks, vehicles and aircrafts. The tanks of which the Rebel Turian was now working on in the tank hanger. Garrus was so enveloped in his work he didn't even notice ___ coming up to speak with him.

“You have everything you need down here?”
It was Imai doing her own inspection of the Tanker a few hours after 201 checked the place. 201 was always one to miss minor details as she was far more interested in how everything could do the most damage possible instead of decreasing risk of friendly fire and human casualties. It has been some time since the two was able to talk one on one, months in fact. Boy how time ran you by during war. She'd have to see if she could make time for a personal chat when they got business out of the way.

Garrus turned his head at the sound of Imai's voice and pulled himself up to his feet now looking towards the Commander. On the tank he was working on he had just painted over the Vulture insignia so others wouldn't mistake them for part of the army and fire once they were seen. Garrus was planning on painting everything a different color too in order for civilians to be able to differentiate more. Perhaps even draw an insignia of their own if Imai wished it. Garrus Vakarian I'm good, Commander. What do you need?

"I'm good, Commander. What do you need?"
“What's your thoughts on the last mission?”
She wasn't sure if “mission” was the right term to use, but she didn't know what else to call it aside from a massacre. And before that it was an actual mission with them searching for the Spokesman of Insanity who had became the biggest thorn at Vulture's side, before reports of a man named Albert Wesker came flooding in. Imai couldn't help but wonder had they done things a little differently could they have saved the underground base and the people who lost their lives? She waited to hear the turian's thoughts on the matter.

Garrus Vakarian You had no way of knowing that hacking the Novalith Cannon would allow Vulture to take over our systems. They did a good job keeping their new toys under the radar for the perfect time to strike. It's easy to see why the General has been in charged for over one hundred years. Had Genius not hacked it Kragen and I would have been goners out there. Garrus gently placed a hand on Imai's shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. Garrus Vakarian Don't blame yourself. We lost a lot of good people back at HQ but they knew the risks when they signed up and now? We have even more resources to take the fight to the General. I'm thinking of painting these tanks a different color so people won't confuse us with the enemy. Any requests?

Imai expected him to say this. Of course she didn't regret giving the green light for Genius to hack the Novalith Cannon, but even so she should have anticipated that the Vulture would do something. This whole thing could have been avoided and less human life lost in the process.

The hand on her shoulder didn't go unnoticed as she looked at it, then back to him with a gentle smile on her soft facial features before the Rebel Turian shifted the focus back on the surrounding tanks.
“A dark gray should do the trick. With a blue eagle insignia drawn on the side.”

By this point Garrus had removed his hand from Imai's shoulder and nodded at the request. Garrus Vakarian Gray with a blue eagle. Got it. Is there anything else you need?

"Gray with a blue eagle. Got it. Is there anything else you need?"
“I was interested in just talking for a while,” said Imai with a smile on her face.
Imai couldn't remember how much time has passed since the two had their last conversation. Imai only remembered how enjoyable it was and would very much like to share another one. As this line of work can clearly show, you never knew if you'd live to see tomorrow. Every moment was precious.
“How did you end up working at C-Sec? By the sounds of it you hated it.”

Garrus nodded. Having more than enough time to spare with Imai as he put away his tools for the time being and faced her again. Garrus Vakarian What do you want to talk about? She asked why he joined C-Sec and immediately he went over the memory, remembering the similar discussion he had with Commander Shepard on this subject as well. Garrus Vakarian Originally I was a candidate for the spectres but my father blocked my candidacy. He didn't like the spectres, how they operated outside of the law. He felt they needed to be held accountable for their actions and didn't want me becoming one of them. He was head of C-Sec and a large part of my reason for ending up there. As you know already that didn't last long, both times. Too much red tape. The guilty being able to walk away because of a technicality. I just couldn't take it anymore whether family was there or not.

“Some times you have to operate outside of the law to get things done. We wouldn't be here if everybody just blindly followed the law no matter what. Then again, I suppose you can't really compare. Vulture's idea of Law is “Do what I say and you won't be shot.”

Garrus Vakarian Yeah, exactly. I used to think it didn't matter how I did things as long as I got it done. Commander Shepard helped me see the folly in that logic. But the world isn't so black and white and the law isn't exempt from that. All bets were off when I reached Omega however...

The world was never so black and white. Imai wished it was though. Then life would be easier. For her and everyone else but that just wasn't meant to be. With so many different shades of gray how could you ever be sure if what you were doing was right? Her war with Vulture was black and white to an extent but shades of gray still got caught up when it came to casualties and how much they were willing to sacrifice in order to defeat Vulture and achieve democracy. A question Imai still wasn't prepared to answer yet.
“Omega? What happened there?”

Garrus had thought he told Imai about his exploits in Omega but he must have confused her with somebody else. So he decided to explain as painful as the memories there were. Garrus Vakarian After word on Shepard's death, which only seemed to have pissed him off more, and the Normandy's destruction I finally had enough. I went to Omega determined to make a difference there, like you're trying to do here. Omega had no laws. No police. It was ran by gangs who went unopposed for too long. I started making life increasingly more difficult for them and rallied up a team of my own. But one of them betrayed us. A turian by the name of Lantar Sidonis. He got the rest of my team killed and then he disappeared. I never could find him and before I could finish business on Omega I ended up here.

“I'm sorry, Garrus. That must have been terrible.”
Imai didn't have any personal experience with betrayal, and hopefully she'd never will, but it didn't take a genius to guess how hard it'd be if it ever did happen. Now it was her turn to try to comfort Garrus by placing a hand on his shoulder while looking at him.
“I never had people betray me before, but I have had people die on me. The important thing to remember is to not blame yourself for what you have no control over.”

Garrus of course didn't miss the soft subtle hand that was now on his shoulder. It was comforting but even Imai's warmth wasn't enough to put out the anger and guilt already present in his heart. Garrus Vakarian Thanks but I could have done something more. I should have done something more. Had I performed more thorough background checks on the people of my team maybe I could have found him out sooner. Stop him before he even had the chance to do any damage... And now I may never find him. My galaxy was big enough already without the multiple realities...
