Utena had been dreading this moment. The moment where she could no longer stall the matter with June, where she had to look her dead in the eye and tell her the truth. A decision was finally reached after much thought and the only thing harder than having to choose between the two, was telling the one they weren't who you chose and why. The former Champion of Ohtori sent June a message telling her to meet her at the hotel in room 108. She sat down on the edge of the bed just a few feet away from the door, staring at it as she knew any minute now a knock would come and she'd have to break that person's heart when they entered.

June was already outside of the door in the hotel hallway, her hand closed into a fist and the back of the palm inches away from knocking on the door. But a bad feeling in her gut was holding her in place, making her hesitate. What if she chose Anthy instead? What if Utena was going to leave her hung out to dry? June shook her head. She couldn't think like that. Besides, June wanted a straight up answer to be reached on this matter and that was exactly what she would get. Without another moment's hesitation June knocked on the door.
“Utena. It's me.”

Uteane swallowed in a gulp and sat up from the edge of the bed. She was nervous, just as nervous as June no doubt was if not more so. Her palms were already sweating by the time she turned the doorknob, which she barely managed, and pulled open the door inviting June inside. Utena closed and locked the door behind her soon after before turning to face June. "Thank you for coming... Would you like anything?"

"Thank you for coming... Would you like anything?"
“The answer I've been waiting for,” replied June.
She looked at Utena, that bad feeling twisting her stomach in knots now as she sat down on the edge of the hotel room's bed and looked up at her, growing ever more anxious with each passing second.
“What's your decision?”

Right to it then, all right she could do this. She has been practicing what to say all morning now. "There's no easy way to say this..." Utena trailed off as she sat down next to June on the bed and took her by the hands, looking into her eyes despite how extremely difficult that was right now and continued. "So I'm going to come right out and say it; June, I like you. I really do. But I owe it to Anthy to wait for her. I'm sorry."

"There's no easy way to say this..."
June felt her heart sank when Utena uttered those words. It was as good as revealing you weren't the one they chose without even saying it. Feeling Utena's hands on hers, June willed herself to look into Utena's eyes dreading to hear the words she knew was coming.
"So I'm going to come right out and say it; June, I like you. I really do. But I owe it to Anthy to wait for her. I'm sorry."
“You owe it to her?” repeated June, clearly not happy about Utena's decision. “You owe it to her!? For god sakes, Utena, she ran you through with a sword!”

"That wasn't her and you know it." Utena removed her hands from June's and sat up, saddened that she had hurt the girl so. She was also saddened that she would say such things about Anthy. No longer could the former Champion of Ohtori bare to look at her as she stared down at her feet. "You wanted me to make a choice and I did. I'm sorry. I hope that we can still be friends."

"That wasn't her and you know it."
“Wasn't it?” asked June.
June stood up after Utena, eyes focused solely on her as Utena herself couldn't stand to even look at her after choosing the Rose Bride over herself.
“What has she ever done for you but be a burden? Do you really think any of that is going to change if you do reunite with her? How can you trust someone who you can't even turn your back on?”
"You wanted me to make a choice and I did. I'm sorry. I hope that we can still be friends."
“No, Utena. We already passed the threshold of friendship when we started developing feelings for each other. There's no going back now.”

"You're wrong. She isn't a burden how can you even say that?" Utena couldn't believe how angry and hateful June was becoming. It was true what they say; love really can make you do crazy thing. June was starting to change colors and for once it wasn't because she was bashful. "What are you saying? That we can't even be friends anymore?"

"You're wrong. She isn't a burden how can you even say that?"
“What would you call her then? You're putting your entire life on hold because obligation holds you to her how is that anything else aside from a burden?”
"What are you saying? That we can't even be friends anymore?"
“I'm saying I need some fresh air. Goodbye, Utena.”
And with that June headed for the door, opening it and then slamming it shut in her anger as she stormed out of the hotel. If Utena was smart she'd let her go. June was unapproachable as of right now, the sorrow she felt turning into rage. Rage at anything that reminded her of Utena or the person she chose over her but at the end of the day she got what she asked for. Even though she regretted asking for it.

"This isn't an obligation. It's my choice I thought that's what you wanted?"
Nothing seemed to be getting through to her as June was heading out the door wanting to end this conversation. Unlucky for both of them Utena could be just as stubborn at times.
"June, wait. June!"
Utena followed June out into the hallway still trying to reach to her even in her blind rage.
"June! June, please don't go. Why can't you understand my decision?"

"This isn't an obligation. It's my choice I thought that's what you wanted?"
“I thought that was what I wanted too,” mumbled June to herself.
She made it down the hallway, the elevator doors at the end opening it up for her as she stepped inside and pressed level one on the elevator's panel before...
"June, wait. June!"
Utena came running after her.
“Leave me alone, Utena.”
"June! June, please don't go. Why can't you understand my decision?"
“Why can't you understand mine?”
June shot back as she stared at Utena from across the elevator's entrance as the doors slid shut.

Utena opened her mouth to speak but could think of nothing to say in response to June's question. Instead she simply stood there and watched as the elevator doors separated her from her friend. Looking down to her feet and turning away to head back to her room. Hoping that in time the wounds would be healed and they would still be able to be around each other without the heartache. Hopefully.
